Spideman 2- error report

We bought spiderman 2 for gamecube recently.
Yesterday and today, after playing for more than 30 minutes, it gave us an error report and told us to shut it off. "Error occurred- unable to read disk. refer io manual." We don't have a manual.
I'm hesitant to believe it's the gamecube. I mean it has happened before but It seemed that it was a dirty disk or dusty gc or something. 'cause it hasn't happened in months.
Now we get a complicated game and play it alot and this starts up.
We noticed some glitches during the game but I don't know if that's normal.
It makes loud clicking noises every now and then during the game. I think it's the gc trying to read the disk, because it clicks during loading and stuff like that.
Someone please tell me that I just need to clean the gamecube or preferably the disk!
 I'm pretty much in the dark right now!
