Home Security Issues...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

...ok, so it's not really my house that’s having issues, it is however, my parents house. Basically, they have some kids in their area that don't like them very much, since they lead the neighborhood watch program there, and, well, long story short, I don't think the kids like having some of their freedoms taken away.

So, my dad, being the crafty fellow that he is, decided he'd install two cameras, to watch the areas that the vandals like to mess with, however, the problem is they don't have anything that can record more then 6 hours of video.

So what I'm looking for is something that can record 24+ hours of video, and is relatively cheap.

I was thinking maybe a dvr, but I'm not sure if TiVo's and the like requires a subscription, or if they can even record the input from these cameras at all (They have the standard 3 pronged plugins). The TiVo site wasn't much help either. I also looked at some other dvr's, but they all looked pretty much the same.

Any ideas or suggestions?

a german shepard?

actually, im sure they can guess when the vandalism is occuring. its hardly likely the little darlings are doing this at 8am or 5pm. or anytime in between. a camera that records from 10pm to 4am will probably catch them.

24 hour security recording would have to be digital and recorded to a PC hard drive. But a DVR would work. Most of them are 80+ hours now. Just hook up the video outputs to the dvr.

hey i dunno if thisll work or not BUT check it out
http://www.success-hk.com/sc_html/c...Rite_IP-Cam.htm

O'Rite IP-Cam is a standalone digital network camera requiring no extra server at the camera site.

it goes directly to a website that anyone with the proper clearance(user name/pass/ip Addy n whatnot) can access... and im sure you can record it from there and if you got a big enough hdd it could record for weeks or months(not sure whatd u could use to record but theres gotta be proggies for it)

hope that helps...

I'm not sure if your situation would make this practical, but maybe you can get a motion - sensing camera that doesn't record unless there is motion.

commenting on Freaks post, that is a good idea. But you have to take into account, small animals, and sometimes cars(if its near the road) would be setting that camera off all night long. And if an animal were moving nearby, and the kids were off camera, it possibly wouldn't catch both of them at the same time. I like the German Shepard idea though!

That's why I said it might not be practical depending on situation

Oscar de la Hoya's dad lives right up the street from me, he has 3 body guards, I guess that would always work.

Maybe you could hire an internet stalker to follow their every move and track them online, reporting on their actions in clever updates on the forum!

the dog would be killed.

Dogs wouldn't survive because my dad would shoot it as soon as it took a crap in his finely groomed lawn.

Not to mention they hate dogs. They're cat people.

So, anyway, back to one of the original questions: Anyone know if you have to subscribe to some sort of service to get a TiVo to work? Or will it work out of box? My parents aren't big on the whole recurring bill thing for something they've already purchased...

One thing to bear in mind about recording, is time lapse. This only records say one frame in about say 1/2 minute, what you've got to bear in mind is that some action, nearly always THE action required is missed with time lapse recording.
If at all possible record in real time and change the tapes every day. Then keep a record of the tape changes and hey presto the whole thing will be accepted by police and courts.
Other wait in the dark for them and give them a 2 or 3 iron from the golf bag!!!
