Computer's not turning on.

I'm pressing the power button, I'm hearing power going through, but no startup (i.e., nothing but a blank screen, but I'm hearing the fans). No BIOS, no Boot up, no POST. Is there a disconnect in the hardware, or something wrong with the boot partition? Something else?

what are your systems specs?

Posted by: Chaz706

Custom Built (No Prefabricated Abominations)

450 Watt Power Supply
Athlon XP 2000 MHz.
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Motheboard
ATI Radeon 9800 All in Wonder Pro
120 Gig Hard Drive (for some strange reason, I can't remember who made it, but it has shown no problems yet).
Windows XP OS
3*128 Megs of Ram (384, I can't quite do the math)
1 DVD ROM Drive
1 CD Rom Drive
1 3.5" floppy drive (Just in case)

have you had this system running previously? and then it stoped working, or is this the first time you are tryin to run it?
Sound like you either need to reset ur CMOS jumper, or your cpu fan connector could be connected to the incorect pin connector on the motherboard

Unrelatedly, next time you think about upgrading your RAM I recommend gettin a stick of 256MB so you can run Dual Channel. this would be the best bang for your buck.

Can you hear the Harddrive spinning up ? does the bios leave you any post clues? or is is just a case of the fans spinning up? when nothing turns on, it might be your ram, although i would have expected a some kind of post error beep. Try running it with only 1 stick in at a time. Also I might be a bit quick in saying that your CPU might be blown... but.. itmight be :P But first off check the seating of the gfx, ram and run with the minimm you can. just to see if you can at least get it to the bios.

No offense intended, simply replying about my problems.
Sandman:
This system has run fine at least 1000 times until now, so this isn't the first time. I'm really thinking about getting that stick of RAM though, cause 512 sounds like a logical idea at this point.

Zorg:
POST is giving me squat. I'm also hearing no beeps. The Hard Drive doesn't seem to be spinning up either. I'll see if I can't run with the minimum ram to see the BIOS first. I doubt the CPU's blown because I don't overclock (if anything, I have my processor set a bit slow methinks).

A possible diagnosis: Maybe the battery that runs the CMOS Clock is out of juice.

Right now, I'm checking if resetting the CMOS will fix it. Just applied some air to the dust in my computer, not much was present. I'll also remount all the power connections.

I'll also check my processor, I really can't say if it's one thing or another at the moment.

What I've done so far in hopes of getting this computer to say something:

-> Reset CMOS via jumpers. No beep.
-> Unplugged Hard Drives. No beep.
-> Removed 256 of 384 Megs of ram. No beep.
-> Re-Plugged Motherboard into power supply. No beep.
-> Checked Processor, re-mounted heatsink/fan. No beep.

Other things I've yet to try:
-> Unplug all drives and turn it on.
-> Remove all ram and turn it on.
-> Replace battery for Motherboard.

I'm not so sure about how to do that last one if at all possible. It looks simple, but I'm not so sure about attempting it.

You also wouldn't mind getting an admin here please?

check your 12v current from psu to motherboard sounds like a dead board. if your power suppy is coming on but nothing else then always check the source i.e you have power to power supply so next step is do you have power from psu to motherboard, if you get a good 12v reading then it's the mobo.
Best regards
Silverfinder

Dear Silverfinder: How do you test your Power Supply 12v?

I've replaced the battery on the mobo, removed all the ram, and unplugged all the drives. The Power Supply Unit has not been isolated as 'not the problem' so I'm going to check it. I doubt it's the PSU though, cause it's an Antec that's less than a year old. I hate to think it's a bad Motherboard, but dang...........

Posted by: Sandman1278

the Asus A7N8X Deluxe Motheboard does not have a +12v power connecter only the ATX power connecter, if ur mobo is bad im warning you, it will take about a month to get a new one from ASUS's RMA department, I had to go through this, week to ship there, 2 weeks to process, and week to ship back

Posted by: Chaz706

4 weeks vs $89 to get a new one......... either one sounds painful. I'd rather send the busted one, get a new one, and wait for the cash to come back if that's an option. How do you test the power supply though?

Posted by: redwench

there are power supply testers available. although having a spare one around is better

youll get through post with a bad battery, usually an error message will show up onscreen, so thats not it.

antec power supplies do die, just like any other brand. just not as often or as spectacularly. mobos and cpus do also die suddenly. although thats about the limit of what could be causing this.

Posted by: Chaz706

Did final testing on Mobo, PSU, and CPU.

We found a spare AMD CPU at 1.2 GHz and put it in. Strangely enough, it worked. Of course, we now know the problem wasn't the Motherboard.......

.....But now we know my processor died.

It's the end of this post, but I'll set up another thread for a new processor.
