Sound distortion wih audigy

Last night my system went from having beautiful, rich sound, to sounding like the crappiest blown out boombox you ever heard. I have no idea what caused it, all I do know is that both my speakers and headphones sound absolutely aweful on some songs, and on others, they sound near perfect, however it is unacceptible. I have tried running my onboard sound instead of the audigy, but it seems to have the same issue, what do you think the problem could be? BTW, I have already tried reinstalling and updating the drivers on both devices to no avail, and the speakers and headphones sound fine on any other system, I am about to have dell send me another mobo since I have no idea what else it could be.

did you go into the sound controls and check that the settings havent been moved?

Nope, nothing has changed, besides, there didn't use to be anything I could do to the control options to make it sound this bad at any volume. I am trying to figure out if my problem is indeed hardware related, as it seems that certain sounds still sound crisp and clear, like midi tunes, but with certain frequencies, the distortion effect is overwhelming.

There are viruses that affect mp3's. Could be a possibility if you use any kind of file sharing service like Kazaa. Do your games also display this bad sound?

Yeah, Doom3 sounds extremely crappy, so it cant one of those mp3 viruses, though at this point, I'd welcome that as a solution to this B**** of a problem.

it really sounds like some kind of setting since youre getting the same result from both the card and onboard. you played anything new lately that might have set an environment?

I'd sure love to think that some setting is just on or off incorrectly but all of my advanced audio environments are controlled through my creative drivers and those have been reinstalled. Also, the settings in the control panel have been set at ultra conservative levels when it didnt use to matter what I did with them before. I installed XP on a backup HDD and it sounded perfect so I can only assume that XP has corrupted itself in some way shape or form. Any idea how to fix this without running a repair installation, my system always takes 10 minutes to boot up after I do one of those.
