full c drive

I keep getting a message that my C drive is full. I've run the disk clean up. The capacity of my C drive is 3.01 GB, and I have 86.5 MB of free space. I've looked at what's in the C drive, and there are a few things that I recognize the title of, like Real Player, and Adobe Reader, but I don't know what most of the "stuff" in there is, so I'm afraid to delete it. What can I do to free up more space? How can I know what's safe to delete and what's not?

Go to "Add/Remove Programs" in the settings folder and delete programs that you know you don't use. Maybe post a follow-up of program you're not sure what they are?

Either that or go spend $20 on ebay and get a HD with 10x the space...

Just a warning, if you're not sure what a program is DON'T DELETE IT until you've figured out what it is. You can really screw up your system by doing that...

Okay, I'm going to sound really ignorant here, and I'm sorry, but I'm of the older generation, and I don't understand very much about computers. Is the C drive the same as my hard drive? If I were to buy a new hard drive as you suggest, how do I know what to get and how is it installed? Would this new hard drive replace the one I have now, or add to it?

C is simply a label for your Hard Drive, so yes C drive is your Hard Drive. If you were to buy another hard drive, you could either use it in addition to the one you already have or your could replace it entirely. Since the hard drive you have is so small, I'd opt to replace it entirely because it could slow down your system and it wouldn't relaly gain you too much having that extra 3gigs when the new one would have at least 20. Anyway, if you don't know much about hard drives I wouldn't suggest replacing it without someone's help. You don't want to risk losing everything you have on your hard drive currently...

If you feel like taking the risk, it's not that hard of a process really. You'd just need to install the new hard drive (basically as easy as plugging it in), copy all the information from your old to your new, and then pulling out your old hard drive. Go to Fry's or Office Depot or whatever and you could get a pretty cheap hard drive that would come with installation instructions and diagrams.

consider a new comp soon also. 3 gigs isnt even enough for a win2k install with a something on it.

snowladyak,

3 gig? Wow. How old is this computer? Do you have a D: drive? Is it a CD or is it another hard drive? (You can tell by the picture/icon under My Computer). You might have a larger drive, that someone broke into smaller pieces. So basically you hard drive could be C and D! (they do this to improve speed sometimes). What windows are you running?

I am all about keeping old computers running, but if you are talking like Windows95 with your 3 gig hard drive, you might as well get a new one. I think the smallest hard drive that comes with a new computer is 40gigs or so. But if you are planning on keeping the old one, which it sound that you are. you need to identify your motherboard's brand and model and make sure you have the latest BIOS patch and then go get yourself another hard drive off ebay or from your local electonics store. Be aware, depending on how old your computer is and which version of windows/linux you are running you are restricted to the size hard drives you can use.

Generally Windows95--- about 2gigs

I can't remember the other sizes right now... dang.. one of those things that would be on a test... I suppose you can check yahoo.

Certain older motherboards cannot support hard drives larger than 127gigs.

well, bed time,. hope that helps,

-Daniel
