I had the same problem, its happens to people all the time. The easy solution is just to go and download this: http://www.oldversion.com/download....b976ee2d9d52861
Its an older version of aim, the newer versions of aim don't work well with newer computers and has problems with SP2.
Trillian or gaim work too as well. Hope this works out for you.

yea, although i dun really like the user-friendlyness of gaim, or trillion...that's why i'd rather have aim
It just so happened that i ran ad-aware just before the crashing started so after i opened adn release all the quarentine's from that previous scan, everythign started workign again...
needless to say i got rid of ad-aware and got a microsoft program for ad removal, but thanks for the suggestions guys.
If anyone else has this problem, it may have been something like this, so give it this a try.
