i built a new machine and put a secondry 80gb harddrive from another machine in it.
when i boot the machine it will try and install the os from cd. until it gets to the bit where you have to partition the hdd. there is no hdd detected.
it wont detect it on p.o.s.t. either and it list all the other hardware.
I put the disk back into my other machine and formatted it. ntfs. and moved the jumpers about. slave, master, and no jumpers and still nothing.
its primary ide master and primary ide slave is nothing...
any help appreciated

sounds like you have a bad motherboard if the bios doesnt detect it. but try it alone without any other drives, and on both ide channels. dont forget to change the cable as well.

hope the m/b is ok.
I tried another cable and its fine. is it anythin to do with ntfs or reformatting the drive. I went into the bios and tried to autodetect but to no avail.
If i reset the bios (take battery out for a while) would that do any good?

its a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 - hard drive - 80 GB - ATA-133
on windows xp
the motherboard is MSI K7N2 Delta-L SKT A 8xAGP DDR400 Nforce2 6ch Sound LAN USB 2.0 Motherboard
the graphics card is Sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB DDR 8x AGP S-Video & TV Output Retail Box
I have no idea why it is not working. do you think if i take it out and put it into another machine, reformat it again and run fdisk to create partition would it help? I had to do this already for the other machine to read it as secondary drive tho
Absolutly lost here people !!

If you have another IDE HDD, try using that to see if the Mobo detects it. That will either confirm or eliminate the mobo as the issue ...
Also, your HDD should be detected by the BIOS regardless of what formatting or OS is on it. That is, unless you've disabled your IDE controller. Have you pressed DEL during boot and checked your BIOS settings for that possibility ?
