Severe drop in internet speeds

Starting about a week ago I've noticed my internet going very slow. My normal speeds of around 200 KB/sec drop to anywhere between 5-50 KB/sec. I've got Verizon DSL, and have never experienced something like this before. The weird part is, none of the other computers in this house, which are all networked together, experience this problem. Just mine. I've tried clearing all my temporary internet files, clearing out my cookies, updating my network drivers, installing everything in Windows update, just about everything I can think of. It went back to normal this weekend, but now it's slowed down to a crawl again. Right now I'm completely out of ideas because I know there are a number of things that could possibly be causing this.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

What exaclty slowed down? Downloading files? webpages? steaming video and audio? all of the above?

All of the above. Games, web pages, downloads, everything.

is your network wireless?

I'm connected with a wire (that's called an ethernet cable right? Shows my ignorance when it comes to this sorta thing, heh). Though our router (Linksys) does have a wireless capability, nobody uses it.

Hm, I also just noticed that in the back, where the ethernet cable plugs into, there's a light that's flashing. I looked at the back of my brothers computer and his light isn't flashing. Does that mean anything?

The light next to the ethernet cable flashing is simply the transfer of information going in and out. If yours was flashing, that means that you were sending or receiving information via the web whereas your brother's computer was idle. If you WEREN'T doing anything, no dl no browsing etc, then that might be you problem: Something on your comp is using your internet connection without your knowledge. Spyware?
I'd do a scan of your comp for viruses with whatever virus protection program you have and I'd also do a spyware scan (there are a number of them available on the web for free if you don't have one).

I checked it later when it wasn't doing anything and the light wasn't flashing anymore. I did check for Spyware though, that was one of my first thoughts.
I also realized our network is setup weird (my brother did it!) and it goes from the main router at his computer to a secondary router which then connects mine and my dads computers. My dads computer is starting to experience similar issues, though my brother isn't, so I'm guessing that secondary router may just be going bad.

Why aren't all the computers all connected to the same router?
If both comps that are hooked up to the secondary router are experiencing the same prob, then you most likely have identified the problem...
I can't think of a reason why you would need two routers.....

You should try resetting the router serviceing your computer. Just unplug or turn it off for a minute and then power it back up.

If that doesn't solve the issue, you may also want to install a patch for the SP2 socket bug. Essentially, microsoft had the brilliant idea to limit open sockets to 10, dramatically decreasing your download/whatever speed. I like this one because it also includes a real time socket monitor with the app.
