Whip out the hammer-- I got more problems..

Okay, so this time, I'm having console problems with a GameCube. I borrowed it from a friend, who said it was busted, so I am going to try and fix it. Previous attempts to fix it revealed that there may be a scratch on the underside of the lens. How that got there, I don't know. I haven't personally seen it, so I can't say that it is there.
So let me start off by saying--are there repair kits available for lenses>? If so, where can I get one, and how much would they cost?
Anyway, the Cube itself DOES work, for a few minutes. You put in a disc, it loads, and plays for about 5 minutes, and says that the Disc cannot be read. Fine. Whatever. I looked around on some other forums, and some troubleshooting sites, and I'm thinking that perhaps I can recalibrate the lens in order to get it to work. Unfortunately, I can't even get the case open because I don't have the proper screwdriver. I'm going to get it from a friend, if he ever remembers.
What I am asking is:
Should I look for a lens repair kit?
Should I even try to fix the Cube if the lens is scratched?
Do I need to recalibrate the lens?
And, are there any other possibilities as to what could be wrong, if it isn't the laser or lens?
Oh, and this has happened with multiple discs, and I have cleaned the top of the lens. Any help would be appreciated, but if the Cube is shot, then it's okay. My friend hasn't used it in a while, and if I did fix it, he'd just sell it to me.
