win 98 se and linux
OK when running win 98 i get the blue screen of death. This mostly occures randomly when watching movies with Windows media player. It also happens with the game, IGI. Is there any way to know what is wrong? Should i just reinstall windows (not format the drive though)?

Yeah, if we knew those 'some letters' and 'some numbers' it would probably help.

Without more detailed information about your system and motherboard, we can only take guesses as to the problem.
A few things to try.
If this behavior just started, run a virus scan. Some of this behavior sounds similar to what two of the current virus's look like as they do the nasty on a system.
From windows 98se
Start/programs/Accessories/System Tools/System information
As this loads find the "tools" menu-up top. From the tools menu select "system file checker" and run that. If it finds any errors it will display and ask for a repair path. > You can use the Win98se CD Rom or the c:\windows\options\cabs files to reference.
Check to see what version of directX you have installed. DirectX 8 is the latest version.
Check to see if you have the latest drivers from VIA available http://130.94.169.181/downloads/patches/4in1432v1.zip
Check to see if you have the most current version of Graphics drivers for your card.

Ah, NovaZ, although I do feel for Sops with blue screen of death and all(I hate that feeling!), I must say that this thread was good for a chuckle or two. :P
I wish I could help out and actually post something useful, but unfortunately I'm quite ignorant.

Hey Sops ... I think it may be a video card problem or most likely a bad memory problem... have you downloaded the "latest" drivers for the Voodoo3 card? What version of DirectX are you using?
If it doesn't work, try moving the memory chips around (change the slots) from inside your computer and see if it solves it ... If it doesn't, then try booting up with one RAM stick at a time to isolate a possible bad memory chip...
Since you are using more than 256MB RAM with Win98SE, you might also wanna check this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/suppor...s/Q253/9/12.ASP
...and try the solutions ...
Post back on your progress...
