HL-2 problem

I downloaded steam then i downloaded HL-2 by putting in the serial i got. Whenever i try to play the game it loads and everything...the dude with the valve in his eye appears, but as soon as another screen pops up and it says loading on the bottom right, it freezes. Right there on the spot. I left it to load but it just stays there...My specs are below...
any help would be highly appreciated

I'm having the same problem as you have you tried checking for device conflicts? That was my friends advice who plays the game alot.
I have a 2.8 GHZ Pentium 4 with 1Gb of 400Mhz, Geforce 5200 Fx.

It is very wierd...i think it is a common freeze up. Do any of you know where to go to check for valve's troubleshooting?

You would be better off at www.steampowered.com and using the support service instead of the forums. It's a shame the forums there are populated with idiots who complain at everything you say or do.

thanks a lot....I tried looking at the support section but there was nothing. It seemed like a pretty common screw up in the forums. Many people are saying that I should have waited 10-20 minutes. And some said that i have to validate my files...god knows how...i will redownload the game.
