one thing to note that i tried... went to micro$ofts site and searched for snap-ins. and found a way to add/remove snapins to the management console, but when i tried to add it there, i get the same error. seems like my windows "lost" my services snapin...

When is the last time it worked? Has it ever worked? Have tried running system restore or last known good config?

Posted by: oderus1671

its been this way for prolly a couple of months but i never needed to edit the services so i didnt think much of it. ive tried to run the system file checker but not restore. I dont know when it started this, so i dont know when to restore from any other ideas?

oderus1671,

Sounds like a corrupt registry/setting. But I don't play around with the snap ins... I would say try putting an older registry in and see if that helps. Could also do a system restore, but not really sure if that will work with the registry. Hey! Let us know how this works out, looks like you've stumped us.

Just got off Microsoft's web site, looks like they say normally points to a registry corruption. Microsoft's answer is to reinstall OS. But, probably better to try and restore an old registry first. Back up data!

Let us know!

i know this is an old thread, but does anyone think if i do a repair installation off the windows xp disk will help? i really need to fix this, but i dont want to reformat just yet. im just afraid that if i do a repair install, i will need to re-fix a bunch of stuff (is that a real word?) like drivers and programs. i also tried a SFC and it prompted for the windows disk, but still no go. micri$ofts site says it has to do with system variables, but the string they tell you to edit is already there. im confused!

You don't need to reformat... Just boot from the XP CD and restore windows... you shouldn't have to lose any data, other than some Windows settings and such... but backup importatnt files just in case
