ie battle

I give up on trying to control ie on my own. My computer has been in the shop three times in the past six months, and with each fresh start, I get spyware, popups, and unauthorized homepage launches at startup. I took the ie icon off my desktop, and began using Mozilla. It is working great in and of itself, and I wondered why I ever felt so attached to ie in the first place.
Unfortunately, now when I start my computer, I get ten ie-controlled viruses that pop up before I even have the chance to start Mozilla. It takes me several minutes to remove them all, and now a few popups have even made their way into the Mozilla environment, and suddenly junkmail is showing up in MS Outlook. I have spent about as much money as I can spend with a technician, Semantec, Spysweeper, and Black Ice. Is there an inexpensve way to completely disengage ie without affecting the rest of my MS applications? Nothing against MS, but if they are constantly the target of all the hackjobs out there, I would rather just move as far away from the entire platform possible.
I am not a computer whiz, but would appreciate any thoughts on the matter that the forum has. Thanx.

get all the stuff in my sig, install everything, patch/update everything.
disconnect the cord to the internet.
run everything. check for popups. monitor your startup programs with spybot.
reboot a few times looking for popups.
if you seem to be clean, use ie and go to windows update. patch everything.
post a screenshot of these popups

first, it sounds like your OS and ie are not fully updated. if youre running xp, you need to get rid of the crap first or you could end up needing a format.
1. disable windows messenger service and disable activex in ie
2. get the stuff in his sig
3. spywareblaster from www.javacoolsoftware.com
4. download the latest version of hijackthis from somewhere
5. update everything in 2&3, get offline
6. run all the stuff in 5, including blocking options. set the av and firewall to run at startup and reboot.
7. if nothing interesting happens, enable activex and run windows update immediately.
8. if you still have crap, run 4

Thank you for the replies. I already feel as though I stumbled on the right site with whizzes that can help me through some computer issues. Unfortunately, my two responses referred to "my sig" and "his sig". I am not at all familiar with these terms, terms that might even be specific to this site, and I could not find mention of them on the internet. Any help?

Thank you again for the direction. My computer seems to be running a little more slowly, and Zone Alert seems to be doing battle with a lot of "ok" accesses as well as the other programs. Is it possible for Black Ice and Webroot Spysweeper. Is it possible for all this new software on my computer to be working against each other? I am still getting a lot of popups, mostly right after Start-up. I got a little wary of running Spybot at Startup because of all the warnings and the fact I was not completely sure how to do it. I am suddenly getting a lot of unsolicited email in MS Outlook. I put a lot of hours into it, and still do not know if I made any progress.

did you do exactly what they told you to do? all of the steps in order?
If not, or you didn't know how to do something, let us know and we will help you.

yes, you only need one firewall. nor do you generally need any kind of anti-spyware running in the backgrould. 1 firewall and 1 av will do. if youre fond of black ice, clear all the permissions you already have set.

i've had some problems with zone alarm keeping me from doing some advanced things with my web server and remote access but other than that it was good. I'm assuming, of course, that you aren't doing much web programming so I don't think you should have much of a problem with zone alarm. I would also suggest adaware se. I use both of those programs in addition to my virus scanning software. you can you AVG for free, or go and buy some other program from your local computer software supplies store (best buy?) By running adaware and a virusscanner at least once a week, while blocking intrusions with zone alarm you should find yourself without those annoying pop ups. As for your unsolicited email, that's another issue completely, although may be tied to data miners installed on your pc.
get those three points of protection (virus scanner, spyware scanner, firewall) and install them
make sure they're updated (they should have some menu options to facilitate this)
and run them often
that's how i keep "clean"

Thank you Matt and everyone else for your generous support. I am not sure how to run any of the Startup virus checkers at setup from all the recommended software. There seem to be a lot of warnings in each software about doing so, and I am petrified of ruining something that is part of the Op Sys. Other than that, I will keep rereading and re-executing all the advice until I reach 0-defect.
One more thing: as I was disengaging from active-x in ie, then replaced the "enable" settings upon completion of all the scans, I think I affected a crossover feature for MS Outlook. None of the icons or links load within the email environment. It does not seem to be affecting actual performance, but the void is noticeable.
