router speed slow.......

right now im running Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router With SpeedBooster with cable supposedly up to 5mps but most of the time its awful...we arent wireless yet tho still wired throught the wireless router...just wondering if there is anything that i can do to tweak the speed...it really sucks when we are on xbox live or ps2 online....pc gaming isnt too bad but nowhere what it is on straight internet connection....hope you guys can help....oh ya i have a gig lan slot on my asus motherboard....only kick ass on straight connection...thanks..

Try lowering the Mtu to 1452.
