New Windsows XP - and problems.

Hi,
We purchased a new computer (HP Pavilion a810n) a few weeks ago. We've had problems, problems, problems since. Thought I had trouble with our old computer!
We finally got our new p/c running properly (I think), but I still cannot open files I saved to disk from our old computer. The old p/c was Windows 98 with Windows Office 2000 Pro as our working programs.
The old computer was heading for a crash, so I saved all my stuff to CD's. I could get some of those files saved to the new p/c and can open them, but I have MANY that will not open. Several are simple files such as Microsoft Photo Editor. I have tried changing them to Microsoft Photo Manager (which is the only photo editing program on the new p/c at this time), but they will not open. I get error messages saying "Not right type of file", "Cannot read file type", etc. There are also some simple .gif files that will not open and some that were Word docs, but now show as WordPad docs, but still won't open. I was under the assumption that by saving to disk I would be able to access these files.
Can anybody give me any insight as to why I cannot open these files?

you are probally opening the files with the wrong applications. like the .doc files are for word, so go into word and goto file>open>filename and do that for all the files...that should work....if not then your files are probally corrupt

I tried changing the applications in which the files open. Like I said, some "were" Word docs and they won't even open, so I guess they are corrupt. Damn! All that work down the drain!
If anybody else has any ideas, I'm willing to try them. I'd really like to recover those files!

sounds like your old drive is still working. just pop it in the computer and copy over the files.

No, the old drive is in the old computer, which is definately NOT working! LOL Stupid, dead thing won't even start any more.
Can viruses transfer via disk? I know there were viruses on our old computer, or so Norton's told me. Norton said that it quaranteened them, but when I tried going in to find them, nothing would come up.
The old computer had partitioned drives in it, one which was 32 and the other was 17. The 17 drive worked, the 32 did not. Apparently, I had saved everything to the 17 drive. The CD burner was also giving us fits, or at least the program was. It took several tries to get the stuff burned to the CD's, so I'm wondering if that could be the problem with the disk from which I'm trying to transfer stuff to our new computer???

how do you know the hard drive isnt working?

NOTHING is working in the OLD computer - it won't even start. The NEW one is fine, it just won't let me open the files on the disks.
I'm not sure I understand your question, or why you asked it. I'm here to learn, but I thought I made myself clear - the OLD computer is not working - at all. The new one is working fine, it just won't let me open the files that I saved to disk from the OLD computer. Most of the files were/are Word docs. Some are .gif files. I had Microsoft Office Pro 2000 on the old computer, and when we bought the new one, it came with XP, which only comes with a 60 day trial for Word, so I installed 2000 in the new one. It won't open the files saved to disk from the old p/c, even in Word 2000.

i dont think youre understanding me. i got that the computer doesnt work, but is the drive functional or not?
Posted by: TanBrae
You're right, I didn't understand. Duh! Got it now!
Well, I'm not sure if it's functional. That would mean taking it apart, and I don't know how to do that. I will see if I can get a friend to do it for me. Then, if I understand where you are going with this, we should put the drive into another computer and see if it works, correct? If so, I may be able to pull the information off of it?

ya, hook it up as a slave in your new computer and copy&past the files onto your new drive...but this isnt going to stop you from transfering viruses from the old drive, so update your noron and then scan your old drive before your transfer anything.

yes, if the drive is working reasonably well, you should be able to pull any data off it without a problem.
