XP internet connection problems

My internet connection shows to be working when viewed through the control panel. I've tried to repair it comes back with a error when renewing my IP address. I've tried going through the command prompt and renewing it with regedit with a response about "trying an application on something that is not a socket". From this i gathered that is was a registration key problem. What can i do to fix it.
