I have helped a lady to install SP2 for her. Now after a couple of days, when
she logon windows is detecting a new hardware to install named Win XP Promise
Fast trak 376 Controller. Where is that coming from, nothing has been added
as hardware on this computer? And what does that do?

Did the message she got, look like this?
fasttx2k="WinXP Promise FastTrak 376/378 ™ Controller
That seems like that when installing SP2, it triggerd the Harddrive RAID controller.
RAID is a harddrive configuration, using 2 or more harddrives in unison.
I think that you just can ignore it.
If you are interested, you can download SIS Sandra and use the System information module.
And see if also Sandra detect this "Ghost drive"?

never seen it this way but saw RAID controller somewhere. When we try to install it it says that it is not in the approved hardware windows list kind of. We did not install it yet but want to know what it is doing and find strange that it is a hardware since we never install any new ting

I have used the time, since I posted the earlier reply, trying to find anything written in Google about this problem, but nothing turns up.
And I have never heard of it before.
But I'm pretty positive, that some other guy here does know what this is all about?
So if you wait a while I'm sure you will get help, solving this mystery.

This is kinda weird. the XP SP2 is mostly security updates that patch up vurnable spots in XP... Promise Fast Track is a RAID 0 or 1 setup. I work with Promise hardware a lot at work. Most of the systems I do have some sort of RAID setup. RAID has two different types or drive usage. One of them is called a spanned volume. With spanned your computer will write a file to all of the drives in segmants...so if you have 3 drives in your RAID then 1/3 of the file will be written on each drive. Therefor yuor read/write performance is drastically increased. The other RAID is security. It will copy the entire file to both drives, so if youloose one of your drives or have a hardware failure, then the otehr drive will have the same adsact thing on it. During yuor boot up, you should be able to enter the Promise Fast Track bios. If I recall right, you do this by holding down CTRL+F when you are prompted too. In here you can set up your raid for Performance(the spanned) or Security(the one that writes the same to all the drives). Then After you do this you shouldnt have any problems with Windows. If you are not familuar doing this, I would have someone who knows what they are doing do it. Cause if the RAID is already set up, I dont know what will happen if you try and re-do it. I looked on www.promise.com the web page for the FastTrak manufacture and i could not find the model that you are talking about. Contact Promise and try and get the most updated drivers, unless you can figure out the problem through the promise bios, but i doubt you will...its probally a driver issue

Hello
Well, since you said it is not certifide driver, then this driver may have problems with some of the newer system files that have been installed with service pack 2, when i installed service pack 2 on my computer i lost loads of programs like virus scanner, and some others can't remember others, but i also lost the abilty to use 2 hardware devices, one of them was my digital tv card and the other my usb card. I just had to reinstall the drivers for the tv and all was well, but usb card fialed, kept on saying hardware dameged, not working, but i got fed if of it trying to reinstall the usb drivers everytime i loaded windows xp, just to tell me that hardware failed, i REMOVED service pack 2 from windows, and sone as it had been removed i had full access to the usb card, and it say the devices attached to it, usb joystick, and webcam, also external Zip drive, never had service pack 2 since, and never had problem with usb card since, i also removed it because a lot of my games did not work on sp2 niether, like Divine Divinity crashed with exception caused in module slasher.dll. And Neverwinter Nights had problems as well, and games that where even older, like windows 95 games, did not work at all.
Regards
Andrew
