Does that mean theyre trying to scare Taiwan ****less hoping it might prevent civil war?

China's legislature has passed a law giving it the legal right to use force against Taiwan if the island moves towards declaring formal independence.

Sounds pretty straightforward to me -

I doubt that by "use force" they mean "gently nudge them back in line" http://forum.presence-pc.com/images/perso/kryten.gif

The declaration seems rather frivalous dont you think? If Taiwan declares formal independence, of course the Chinese are going to take it back by force. Seems they're hoping to scare the Taiwanese (?) from ever declaring formal independence in the first place.

Obviously the core purpose of this law is first & foremost to obtain a dissuasive effect. Even the world's largest army would favour, um, "diplomacy" () over the hard way...

The Chinese government asserts that Taiwan is part of its territory and has as many as 700 missiles aimed at the island located 100 miles off the mainland's southeast coast. Taiwan's elected leaders insist it is an independent, sovereign country. The United States formally recognizes only the Chinese government, but it sells arms to Taiwan and has pledged to help defend the island of 23 million.

The ceremonial National People's Congress passed the law despite U.S. appeals for restraint. It came a day after President Hu Jintao called on China's military to be ready for war and followed a 12.6 percent increase in the country's defense budget for 2005.

There's no question of their intentions now. This is going to get really ugly.

Wen Jiabao said the law was aimed at strengthening relations with Taiwan.
