Secure area of a website

OK my teacher said if we can she wants us to figure out and make an area of our school website for teachers only. She wants it to be password-protected to where only teachers with the correct name and pass can get it, or even give one name and pass to each teacher, if possible. I told her it would take some PHP scripting probably, which I don't know how to do. I was just wondering if anyone knew any good sites to get that kind of code from, for free or a small fee. I just wanna know where to start.

easily done with .htaccess and .htpasswd. It can have multiple names and passwords, but it might not be the most elegant solution, however.
