DirextX 9.0 graphics adapter -- what videocard?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've read many helpful posts here about headaches with the DirextX 9.0 compatible graphics adapter problems while running SIMS 2.
As best I can tell, our graphics card is an Intel 82845G -- I'm not sure about this because the device manager in the system folder doesn't make clear what the graphics card is.
Another post suggested buying a MSI ATI RADEON 9550SE Video Card for sale on Newegg.com. My question is: how can I tell if a MSI ATI RADEON 9550SE Video Card for sale on Newegg.com will be compatible with my computer? The videocard for sale requires "AMD or compatible CPUs" and must have an "AGP compliant motherboard supporting AGP4X or AGP8X."
How do I tell if my computer is "AMD" and has an "AGP compliant motherboard supporting AGP4X or AGP8X" (and why doesn't the device manager make this stuff more clear?)?
Any help will be appreciated. My daughter paid for SIMS 2 with her baby-sitting money and is trying VERY hard to be patient while I figuire this out. Thank you.

hmmm, well, the easiest way for you to tell exactly what is on your system is to download and run sisoftsandra (freeware version). that will tell you what you have, and what your system is capable of using.
i would forget that particular video card, at least for the moment. prices are always changing, and that card might not be the best choice anyway. if its compatable, of course. the first step is to find out your existing hardware and what is compatable with it.
of course, make sure you follow the troubleshooting tips for this error on the sims2 website. there are some non-hardware causes of the error message that might be fixable.

Hello
Well, that intel graphics you mentioned, is an internal graphics built into the board, and you may not have an agp socket, plus some internal graphics ones do not support many games, they are designed for offices that do not require high speed atate of the art graphics, your board must be a micro atx board as well, this means that your pci solts and agp slot if you have one will be half height, depending on the type of box you have your micro atx board in.

Those are good points, BUT HOW DO I TELL if my motherboard is compatible with these things? Shouldn't I just be able to look in the device manager? What do I look under? It doesn't seem that I should have to download freeware just to find out the compatiabilities of my motherborad, although if that's the case, so be it.
Sorry to be so clueless, and thank you all for the input so far.

Hello
Well, yes you do not need to download freeware, and there is another way, go into start menu and accessories and click system information, this will tell you what you need to know, i have gieven on example picture of the program. Also ignore the black bar, i did that, because of sensitive information.

well, i assumed you wanted the simplest way to get any necessary info. the system information as above will tell you whats actually running inside the box, not what it is capable of or compatable with. the other way is to extract the exact model number and revision of your motherboard, and any other relevant hardware, and go to the manufacturer's website and look up the details.
