Cannot print from IE

When attempting to print from IE I get this message- “An error has occurred in the script on this page/ line 220/ Char 1/ Error In compatible version of RPC Stub/ Code 0/ url res:// c:\windows\system\SHDOCLC/preview.dlg”
I work around lack of printing by copying and pasting to word; all other programs are printing normally.
I am also unable to download from “windows update” but I can from other areas of Microsoft.com. Otherwise the PC is running well.
I was using IE5.5 when the problem started. I upgraded to IE6 to solve the problem without success. I have re-installed windows (but not re-formatted). This put me back to IE5.5. I have tried mcrepair and IEFix. I have followed many suggestions that involve system files being replaced. The most common suggestion is to replace dispex.dll. I have downloaded a later version but ME does not allow .dll files to be replaced. I have tried replacing dispex.dll in DOS without success.
I suspect that the ultimate answer is probably to re-format and re-install windows but this seems such a drastic step for such a small and consistent problem.
Any one recognise this problem?

Formating and installing the OS from fresh will be the quickest way to fix the problem as long the problem is not caused by hdd. If you hdd makes strange noices then change it, the hdd might have surface damage and therefore not storing correctly any data causing your problem.
