Why Do I Have So Much Lag???
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
When I'm playing CS source some maps have so much lag its not even funny. I have a good Internet connection (broadband) and a dell PC that i only got 2 months ago!! But i think it might have something to do with my directX can you down load better DirectX? Please help because i cant play any normal maps and it is really annoying!
Posted by: oderus1671
give the specs on your computer and we'll go from there.
Posted by: redwench
does this computer have something close to a 9800pro/5900 card, 1g ram, and 2ghz cpu or better?
Posted by: Bix VT
CS source is a demanding game...considering you have a prebuilt it's quite likely that your graphics card is garbage.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
XP home
p4
512 ram ddr
160ghz hard drive
and i dont know what graphics card
Posted by: Bix VT
right click your desktop>properties>settings tab. it should be between the picture of the monitor and the resolution slider.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
IT says: Plugin and play monitor on intel(R) 82865G video controller
Posted by: Zakir
That means you have an integrated controller. It is made into your motherboard.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
so i will have to get a new 1? or can i download a directX?
Posted by: Zakir
to play intensive games, you need to buy a video card. the other members are probably better at recommending one though.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
9800pro?
Posted by: goranpaa
Yes, if you want one of the best video cards.
Another good card is Geforce FX 5950 Ultra 256 mb.
Or you can get ATI Radeon 9700 pro or Geforce FX 5900 XT, If you want somthing slightly cheaper, but still good performance.
Posted by: oderus1671
be double sure you have an AGP slot on your motherboard tho! it will be the slot above the pci slots and will be offset from the others.

And what happens if i diont have a slot?
Posted by: Outlaw
If you don't have an AGP slot, the AGP card you'll be buying won't fit anywhere in your computer (except maybe on the bottom as a decoration).
Posted by: Bix VT
definately make sure you have an AGP slot before buying any type of video card. if you don't have one, I would highly reccomend getting a motherboard that does have one. you can definately get one for less than $100 USD that is still very high quality.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Ok thanks i haven't openend this PC (yet) because my dad is all against it he will probably get in a pro to do it (don't ask why). So would a new graphics card sort out the lag problem?
Posted by: redwench
most likely, provided its one thats high enough of course. no guarantees that it will fix it though.
Posted by: Bix VT
it should, seeing as the "lag" is the result of onboard graphics. I'm surprised you can even play CS:S on that machine. it would make me want to kill lots of people (mainly at dell)
Posted by: Zakir
the whole parents thing, eh?

Ya you know what im talking about!!!
I have found maps that i can play in like cs_assault and de_prodidgy and things like that but sometimes i do feel like killing people at dell!!!!!!!
Posted by: Bix VT
yeah they have this thing where they make sure that you get a motherboard without an AGP slot just so you'll have to come back to them later to upgrade if you ever want to play games.
but then, a lot of prebuilt companies are like that. one of the many many reason why it's better to build your own pc.
Posted by: goranpaa
If you wanna find out if your mobo have an AGP slot. Download CPU Z, and then go to the manufacturers homesite and take a look.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download425.html
If it does'nt have one, ATI 9200 PCI. 128 mb. (Not PCI express! as it wont fit your board) Will be the best choise I think.
Posted by: Zakir
you can also download a copy of everest home and that will tell you if you have an AGP slot as well as a bunch of other useful information about your computer.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
I was looking at the video options in CS source and i have a DirectX 9 hardware but only a DirectX 6 software
I was on the Dell home site and came across a thing to download a New DirectX. But i am not sure if it is the right one. If i download it and it is the wrong one will it **** up my PC?
Posted by: redwench
there is no such thing as the wrong one. why arent you running windows update?
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
cause the directX hardware is ok but the software isnt
so it wouldnt mess up my PC?
Posted by: redwench
its possible for any software to mess up your pc if something goes wrong during install. but why havent you been running windows update?
Posted by: Bix VT
this is the latest version of directx: http://www.download.com/Microsoft-D...tml?tag=lst-0-2

My first piece of advce to anyone that buys a computer off the shelf: Get a list of all hardware in your computer from your manufacturer. Motherboard, vid card,CPU,RAM specs...everything. It's gonna come in handy at some time.
The latest version of DirectX is 9.0c you can check it by Start>>>Run and type DXDIAG
at the bottom of the first page you see will be the version number.
Posted by: kyle_katarn3
I've fpund dell's gotten better with throwing on a agp slot regardless of grafix controller, and if the sys is only 2 mos old, could it be possible that he has a pci-e. You also may wanna bump up the ram, if only as a precaution.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
i got a graphics card but when i opened my PC up i found it doesn't have an apg slot....... lol but its ****ed up. Is there any chance i can get a graphics card to fit into the other slots? Because my dad wont let me but a new Motherbord in it
Posted by: goranpaa
You can get a ATI Radeon 9200. 128 mb PCI card, that is quite nice. It will fit into any PCI slot on your mobo. But dont confuse PCI with PCI Express. PCI Express will not fit your PC!
I think that this 9200. 128 mb PCI is the best one you can get.
It's about 40 USD.
But you must uninstall the integrated card, when you install the new video card. This you do In BIOS by pressing the" Delete" key at start up. You just scroll your way, with the arrow keys to "Integrated Periferials" and disable the integrated video chip there.
Then its just to save the new BIOS setting and reboot.
After you have come back to the Windows desk. I would advice you to as soon as possible download a fresh driver from ATI homepage.
The driver on the CD, included with the card is often not up to date, you see.

that's why you always check if you have an agp slot BEFORE you buy a graphics card.
go for the 9200. it'll suck, but still better than onboard.

What about this? http://www.peats.ie/cgi-bin/shop/db...6&sid=1046913x0
Posted by: Superfly3176
Wow that card is like 5 years old, i have one and use it as my test card. Don't buy it.
Posted by: goranpaa
I still say that the 9200. 128 mb is better! The 7000 is an older model. And 64 mb memory sucks, playing modern games.
128 mb is minimum.
Besides, they are the same price.
Posted by: Bix VT
wow, they still make the 7000?
...why?
Posted by: goranpaa
Collectors edition maybe? lol.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
ok can u find one of these 9200 on peats.ie or dabs.co.uk

My boss and I get a lot of crap from different people at work, including people who write some software for us, dell, co-workers, etc. Recently we've been considering an old joke of ours regarding me either writing a level for UT2004 or CS or making my own game in OpenGL. In this level/game, you would choose about ten frightening weapons, storm an office with people wearing Tangoware or Dell nametags, and do...stuff...
About the graphics cards: dude, if you want to see any future for yourself in CS:S quality gameplay, I would buy a computer with a PCIe slot or at least an AGP slot. A PCI card might be able to pull it off, but you must think ahead to even greater games that you'll want to play. I recommend getting a custom built PC from a local small business.
Posted by: goranpaa
I looked in those stores. But none of them have the PCI version of this card.
But I found another U.K. Net shop, that got the card. And I know this guys, as they are Swedish. They are a good company to shop from.
And they can deliver the card by Parcelforce and DHL.
Here is the link to Komplett. Co. U.K.
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/k.asp?&...26-1E4B9E46B33F
Video card and product number:
Product name: Sapphire Radeon 9200se Atlantis 128mb, pci,dvi-i,tv-out, Lite-retail. Price 33.01 incl. VAT.
Komplett #: 122219 / 11022-21-20
They hve 41 sutch cards in stock now
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
I would buy a computer
ya do you want to buy me one?
I found thi on newegg http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-102-403&depa=1 but isnt this for a MAC? If not can you try and find one in and irish or english web site because newegg doesnt ship over here
Posted by: goranpaa
I think, that this is a card for Mac computers. Don't think it will fit your motherboard.
So take a look at Komplett. Co. U.K. They can deliver the card all over England and Ireland.

ya i knew. the funny part was that you misspelled the "tosh" part and kinda seperated the "Mac" and "intoch". Steven Jobs might've gone insane seeing that.
Posted by: goranpaa
O.K.! now I get it! lol!!!
Sometimes, you get it right by getting it wrong! Eh?
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
what about this card? http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=304713&cks=PRL is that one any better?
Posted by: Bix VT
that's probably one of the best cards that you could get for a pci slot, yes. I belive that nVidia offers a pci version of it's 5500 as well, but I doubt you can get it from that website...
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
So it is better than the 9200se?
Posted by: Bix VT
any radeon sard with the letters "se" after means that it's garbage due to the fact that the clock speeds have been stabbed in the back.
Posted by: Superfly3176
Not only clock speeds but pixel pipelines may have been reduced. But, with a 9800se theres the chance at a 9800pro or xt.
Posted by: goranpaa
Here is the FX 5500, that Bix told you about. PNY FX 5500. 128 Mb PCI. 117 USD. (At Tiger Direct). http://www.tigerdirect.com/
But the trouble is, that I can't find any shop in U.K. that got it.
In USA, there whas no problem finding it.
So Either you will have to find a Net shop in USA, that can send you the card.
Or you can contact, the manufacturer, PNY. United Kingdom, at this e - mail adress:
salesuk@pny-europe.com
And maybe they got a clue where in U.K., you can get the card?
Othervice it's the FX 5200. 128 mb. PCI to choose from the Nvidia cards.
The Video card on the picture, is the PNY FX 5500. 128 mb. PCI card.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
So is this the one http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...71564&CatId=697
this card looks good anough!!
Posted by: Bix VT
I belive that's one of the best PCI cards availiable at the moment.
I cant stress how much better it would be to simply buy a new mobo and then get an agp card...but I know how parents can be about thier property.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
I found a 256mb FX 5500 on ebay is that better?
Posted by: Bix VT
more ram is always better, but with the slow gpu and the lack of bandwidth on the pci bus I doubt you'll see any difference at all.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Ok so the 128 is cheaper and it will do the same as the 256
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
O shit please help me quick, i turnd my display upside down so now everythig is upside down and i dont know how i did it and if my parents find out im ****ed so ineed help fast
Posted by: Outlaw
That's a setting somewhere in your display properties.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
ya i found it.
Anywy back to the geraphics cards.... Would there be much diffrence between a 256 and a 128?
Posted by: Bix VT
it depends on the gpu, the bus, and the game you're playing. I'd say don't bother getting 256mb unless it's on a fairly high-end card like a 6800 or x800.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Ok thanks
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Is the AMD Sempron any good?
Posted by: VmanBeBop
http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...cons/icon13.gif
Its the AMD equivelant of the Celeron (total suck!).
Posted by: Bix VT
I have used both an Athlon XP 2200+ and a Sempron 2600+ and the XP was faster.
probably has something to do with AMD cutting the cache in half
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
What about the 64 bit things?
Posted by: ianelarazure
The 64 bit things are top of the market right now.
Posted by: Bix VT
the A64 is awesome, I'm running a very low end A64 and I am still running every single game on the market at max settings with no "lag"
Posted by: Superfly3176
Athlon 64's are l33t. I can't wait until the 128-bit
Its true no lag......at all.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Ok because i was the of getting 1
Posted by: Bix VT
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
Sorry i was thinking of geting an athlon 64 bit processer
Posted by: Bix VT
I'd reccomend this one: http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Prod...N82E16819103487
it's a decent price, and it gives outstanding performance.
Posted by: quiksilver87
hey guys
Johns olaiden you remind me of myself...A while ago i was exactly like you...hhahah...but i finally built my pc and got everything over with.
Im actually thinking of building another "lower end" one with some overclocking hopefully ...so we can have 2 pcs in the house and i could acually play computer while my brother is studying...
You turned your screen upside down...hhahhahaah....that actually happened to me once!
Anyways, enough with that...
I am also running an A64 and it is just perfect!
I would really recommend that you get a new motherboard...I mean there would be absoultely no point in the future to not upgrade. This graphics card will get out of date very QUICKLY! Now the pci-express slot is replacing the AGP!
Just try to convince your parents. Or it would really be a waste. I dont even think it will also fully solve your problem if you get a pci card.
You said that you already bought a card....and found out that you didnt have an agp slot....what card did you buy/get?
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
lol you turned your screen upside down to?
I got a really crap graphics card at a local shop because they were having a sale i got a 64mb prophet i know its shit but i got it for like 20euros.
I will probably build a new pc with athlon proseccer and what not or upgrade a different PC well not really upgrade i will probably get the athlon proseccer and about 512-1g ram, new motherboard, windows xp, will i need a new cpu? and a new graphics card. what do ye think?
Posted by: Bix VT
new cpu is always good.
also, make sure you research any computer component thuroughly before you buy it...
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
What do you mean? like look at the specs of the componants?
Posted by: Bix VT
and reviews as well. word of mouth is a very important thing when it comes to large purchases.
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
what about here, will i ask people here?
Posted by: quiksilver87
yeah go ahead...but make sure that, that your parts are compatible. like your motherboard with your ram or cpu...
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
But i will get a new cpu and ram
Posted by: quiksilver87
my point exactly, make sure that they are compatible with your motherboard. Good luck with the convincing!
And post some pics if you need help!
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
ok i will ask yee for help
How much do yee think a mobo, athlon procceser, RAM and a new CPU will cost in euro
Posted by: Bix VT
300 or so if you go budget style
Posted by: JohnsO'laid
ok i will go budget style
