half life 2 trouble

Hard drive recently crashed, Dell fixed me up with a new one. Loaded my half life 2 cd's and waited for steam to do it's thing. When steam said it's ready and I try to start half life 2 I get a box that says: "engine error, unable to init shader system." So naturally I am lost. Any suggestions?

1 gb sdram
Maxtor 250 gb
ATI Radeon x300 SE
Sound Blaster 24-bit

Have you downloaded and installed the latest video card drivers from www.ati.com yet? The default windows drivers sometimes don't work too well in games.

No, I will check that out. It worked fine before my hard drive crashed though.

Good call Outlaw, I somehow missed loading the needed driver from the CD that came with the computer. Thanks for heading me in the right direction.
