Win95, networking, and opening ports

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I need to be sure a few ports are open to play this internet game called Jumpgate. There's numerous posts at the NetDevil board about opening ports when playing through a proxy.

I'm using an @home cable modem. My computer has a network card that connects to the cable modem. No other computers connected. @home gives me a static IP, too.

When I boot up, I need to enter my microsoft network password. When I connect with Internet Explorer, the message in lower left briefly says detecting proxy settings. Under control panel/internet options/connection/LAN use automatic configuration is checked. The box is filled in with: http://proxy.some#thatIforget

It looks like I have a network setup to me, and I need to allow a few ports UDP access to get JumpGate to work.

On the other hand, my firewall stops attempts to access my PC every few hours, so at least most ports don't seem to be blocked (I assume the firewall would never see the attempt if if it was blocked upstream). Then again, maybe not.

Win 95 has intructions on enabling ports by going to control panel/internet options/advanced, but there seems to be no box to open ports like the instructions say.
Any advice greatly appreciated!

Would it be easier just to disable networking for JumpGate?

I can play the offline sim fine. I can get to the panel where you put in name, password, and then hit connect. I get the error message "Can not connect to internet. Dplay init failed." after 1-2 seconds. I never "hang".

Have youe tried to disable the fire wall. I know that with mine it is really easy to think that it is not blocking something but it really is.

Sometimes the firewall is integrated into the modem itself. Try checking the actual firewall settings (if it is a software firewall, the settings in the software), and if it is a hardware firewall (with the modem), check the modem's documentation to find out how to open ports/disable the firewall.

If the ports are being blocked upstream, as you said, then all you can do is contact your ISP and ask them to open the ports. If it is further upstream than that, well, I don't know what you can do.

I have tried disabling the firewall. I've also booted up without the firewall and still can't connect. Also, the firewall never even detects an attempt to access the internet. I think it's blocked (or maybe the game just errs out) before it gets to the firewall.

@home claims this modem doesn't block any ports. It's an external modem connected by an ethernet card. The card has no blocking settings that I can find in the Windows 95 GUI interface. Nor can I find anything to open or close ports in my internet options in settings.

Is there a script that may be sitting on my hard drive that my Microsoft Networking may be using to configure the network by closing some ports?

Is there some way I can test if my ports are open?

Well, @home is blocking those ports for "commercial use". They do say that 3DO should be able to help me with a workaround by opening the port. I sure can't see how to do it from the GUI interface from Windows 95. I'll guess there's a script file laying around somewhere.

Anyone know how ports are opened, or even blocked in Win 95?
