The Group and Project404 are down for the regulars that visit it. Estimated downtime is a couple of days, it seems like a lot of things got "focked up" as Wargy puts it. 
Good luck to all the TG\P404 Staff!! We shall be waiting for TG's return

So what happened exactly? I heard somewhere the OS on the webserver took a nosedive, but aside from that and Warg's detailed description  I haven't heard much......

According to the host, a backup wasn't necessary. They claim that the HD that died contained no site information, but was sufficient to make the server inaccessible.

There is a slim chance we can get everything back up and running by tomorrow, but we will more likely remain offline for about 2 days.
Most of the hosted sites I deal with have been pretty good about the situation. Personally, I'm surpized at how understanding those folks have been with us.

I'm sorry we aren't online for you right now. We will do everything we can to get things in order ASAP.

the HD with the linux server got corrupted and the entire server bin fokked ..
it is not only my sites and the hosted sites .everything ..
the files/forums/databases/users/data/halflife servers are safe and sound on the 30 gb drive i brought to houston couple a weeks ago .
so no worries ..
logical is busting his ass to get the server up and running again but he is hitting some major probs ..
however i hope that the server is up and running within the next 10 hours .
Tho we never expected this disaster it made clear we need some backup/mirrot plan .
Me and arta are looking into that one so we can sync servers .
Memnoch is checking numbers for a basic mirror that will enable us to have core sites up and running ..
Tho i am not expecting a failure like this again in the future . and if it happens the response time willbe alot quicker .
i remmeber happyhippo.com would have 8 different mirrors and u could see the status of them and then click the fastest server to you .
anyone got any idea on how to pull that one off ?
i am setting up a third mirror here in holland .. that is good for european readers but it would be slow for americans .
i am sorry for any problems the downtime causes .. trust me i am not happy with it at all . but there is not much i can do .
Western digital drives may not be the fastest but they are super reliable

i understand the problem completely, why i'm not even running off my HD right now! my tower is horizontal and exposed with supacow's HD sitting on top of it plugged in (which i'm running off) took us about a week to get my HD formatted properly...stupid NTFS file system... so now i'm just being lazy and not installing windows on my HD. i lost everything on it anyway so what's the rush :P

It's not just you Laggy....I've tried all day to get to the site and I haven't been able to get through. I did manage to access it again for a little while around lunchtime, but it went down again pretty fastlike.

heheh, at this rate someone should set up a TG Refuge Site for all the times we go down, or a BB somewhere. I would set one up on 4s, but we just happen to be hosted on the TG server as well

This is the admission we were looking for.
As we can all see Arty seems to be quite versed with the problems. Well enough to see the issues. Thus I say we now blame him.
This has all been Arty's fault. It's been a concerted effort made by Arty over time to slowly croupt select files on the sites that the TG network hosts.
And now he holds The Group and its members as hostages to his tyranical control.

Haven't been able to log into any of the TG servers for a game. I did find a good interim server though that doesn't seem to have any cheaters (you know how rare that is).

The latest info I have is that the OS on our server is being rebuilt completely. They've stopped trying to fix individual bits of corrupt data and are now wiping the slate clean.
That screen is the default apache install page- although all the ascii is wierd
We'll probably get another update today on how things are progressing, untill then, we'll reopen the forums at www.terrorizer.net which should stay up since that server is completely different from the main one (it's in Florida).
Sorry bout all this and there is a working CS server running at 206.135.228.18, on which I will ruthlessly ban cheaters lol

I just hope they can get it fixed permanently soon. I would hate to have to move THZ off The-Group servers because of the errors. Normally, this would not even be an option but I have a perfectly good server that is just sitting there saying - come on man put your site on me.... I am up - I am having no problems....

I haven't had any problems with the site since they fixed the server. Well, besides the forums going slow, but that seems to have gone away now, too.

well , i sometimes get banned also by accident .
it is a nice feature to block off port scanners which can be a real pain in the ass when it comes to the server security .
the problem is when i get banned i cannot unban myself hehe . can't access webmin ..
i can bypass the ban with the anonimizer plugin (till we ban that one)
however webmin cannot be accessed by an anon proxy infact a while list of those are being restricted to access that control panel .
maybe a msg wouldbe clearer next time .
You have bin banned from TG for no good reason . Your either a hacker or your stumbled your foot somewhere you shouldn't have .. or the linux server banned you for no good reason cept that you maybe was surfing with IE . All in all security is providing us with more work .. long live computers and users !

I too, have suffered from the harsh social stigma of being Banned for No Reason...statistics show that 65% of all teenage computer users have been Banned at least once in their lifetime...I lost my 5th wife, my 10th job, and my 2nd home, 2 kids and my 19th Dog because I was Banned for No Reason.
It might be time to bring this heinous social stigma out in the open...and offer our support to those who have been Banned for No Reason...
Hence I hope someone on these boards will help me create "Banned With No Reason" Anonymouse.

Yeah, wacheif, the server usually is a ghost town.
We used to have 4 game servers (all Half-Life mods) hosted in Georgia by a TG member. Unfortunately, we lost our T1 connection and now have 1 box running two Half-Life servers (different ports) in Texas. Ever since this move happened we lost all our traffic.
The old Counter-Strike server was always full. If you didn't have a reserved slot it could mean a wait up to 15 minutes to connect.
Try again some other time.

The Group and all associated sites will be up at a temporary location until some legal problems are straightened out with the provider who has breached the contract. This is already being looked into by two lawyers, so we do not need any offered legal help or replies for now. The DNS entries will be changed and take a day or two to propagate, so the site may seem down for a while longer than it appears because of the added propagation time. We may end up pulling a new T circuit to fix the problem and if some funding becomes available, we can make things much smoother, but trying to do this cheaply is kinda painful lately. Things will start looking up as funding is made available, which may happen after the provider is sued for breach of contract. Several other things are in the works to make things much more stable and faster as soon as we can make the necessary arrangements.

If you need a spare server to work with logic, I run an apache server here at work off a Power Mac g4 with php and MySQL. A bit oddly configured, but it works, and it's a nice machine
Do you have an IP around for the temp server that can be used until the DNS clears? Or am I speaking too soon?

Hi Everyone.
Until I recieve access to TG's DNS configuration, or the person with that access makes the correct changes, TG will remain down. We have a backup thanks to Memnoch. But, we still need to point the Domain there.
In the meantime, Project404.org seems to be active. As a temporary measure, I've linked to The Helper's Forum there via a thread on BattleNets' OpenTechSupport forum.

it is comming up again . it bin moved out to another server for. tg and p404 will now reside on seperate servers (you gotta keep'em seperated)
i could not change the dns crap real fast coz i had to err gain access to my old email box i cancelled 3 years ago . lucky the box was still there and behold alot of spam
then i changed the email adress first and i encountered another err problem again .
TG willbe back up say monday or tuesday depends on how fast network solutions is (after talking to one of their reps i really wonder why they call it solutions)
Re p404 i understand that the HB ppl are moving to a new office and there willbe a new faster connection there .
As stated on p404 sorry for any problems that occurred .

I was informed that TheGroup.org was supposed to be operational again by Monday or Tuesday. Since we are Wednesday, I guess it's not going to well. I've looked for the thread on this matter but it's way down the list so I decided to create a new one. I hope nobody minds.

The Blizzard link to TheHelperZone has been temporarily pointed to Project404 via TheHelper's redirect page. Unfortunately, I was unable to make the redirect work correctly, but the url does point to the right place. (user will need to click the link on the redirect page to make the connection)
Also, I've added a The-Group FPS forum at project404 as a temporary solution.
Project404 is functioning fine. The line might not be as fast as it once was, but I've not seen any down time there during the last week.
