Configuring Router To Make Server

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey guys. I have been having this great BIG issue with my router.....get ready for a newbie question :P

I have SBC yahoo, and my local connection uses Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller to connect (i guess). I want so badly to set up my own servers for gaming, ftp, and mail purposes! But, since the only ip address anyone can connect to is 192.168.1.101 (and that anyone seems to be me), I end up playing alone. lol...can someone help me make it so that people can actually connect to my computer? I tried accessing my router interface by going to 192.168.1.101 in the web browser, but I have no idea what my user name/password is. If I could fix it without having to do that, it would be great. Thanks so much lol, although no one will want to answer the question anyways lol

just my luck :P

Usually I dont mess with my router but I guess for gaming you need to allow packets from port 6112. *I guess* I dont have much experience for routers. Most people with routers are limited in some ways.

Did you change your username/password from the factory defaults? If you did most routers that I have had experience with have a reset button on them that restores all that. If you didn't change the defaults then you should be able to find them in the manual or on the manufactors website somewhere. It usually is a combonation of Admin/Administrator and password.(always change those defaults!)

As for setting up as a server on my router (d-link) I would configure a virtual server to allow packets to go through ports depending on the service. FTP- 21 POP3(incoming mail)-110 SMTP(outgoing mail)-25. I'm not sure what port to use for gaming, whatsthis might be right with 6112 I was under the impression that it was different for each game but I don't game on my pc so I'm not really sure.

I hope I was of some help

I'd just go for a router without a firewall. Curse you Netgear.

For any router/ firewall, there are two interfaces. An internal port and an external port. In your router, the internal port goes to a switch which eventually goes to your computers. The external port goes to the cable modem. So, there are two sets of IP addresses, internal and external. Your router is working as a router, actually NAT, mainly. The ISP is going to assign your external port a public IP. Ever object connected to the internat has a public IP. 192.168.1.101 is a private IP.
