Format of drive has created CD-ROM recognition problems

I recently formatted the drive on my Presario 7222. Yes, this is a very old machine. I reformatted it with the intention of installing Win98. The problem is, after formatting, I now cannot access the BIOS, and after the memcheck it gives me a "Non-System Disk Error." I made a Win98 bootdisk from another machine, and that worked to get past the Disk Error into a command prompt, but the machine now will not read the CD-ROM drive to begin the Win98 installation process. My friend suggested it may be an issue with MSCDEX.exe (the file that coordinates DOS with the CD-ROM drive), and how that interacts with Config.sys. Since there IS no Config.sys because I just reformatted, I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions from anyone?

Look at these two articles:
How to Create a Windows 98 Startup Disk that Supports FAT32
How to Install Windows 98 on a Computer with No Operating System
That should get you there. The problem is getting the Startup floppy disk.

I have a startup disk for installation that came when I bought windows 98, is this what you need? It would be no problem to copy it's contents and email them to you.
