Hello,
This morning I turned on my computer only to find a black screen with "L 99 99 99 99 99 99 ..." and so on covering the screen. This after the three-second POST is finished. So I popped in the Windows XP disk and ran the recovery console.
  • CHKDSK reported no errors.
  • I ran through the "My Documents" folder and it appears all my files are intact.
  • BOOTCFG /list gave me the following:
    Code:
Total entries in boot list: 1

[1] "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"
       OS Load Options: /fastdetect
       OS Location: C:\WINDOWS
  • The MAP command shows this list:
    Code:
       ? FAT16 39MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
       C: NTFS 37056MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition2
       D: NTFS 39198MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition3
       E: \Device\CdRom0
       F: \Device\CdRom1

To give you an idea of my computer system, I had installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 in a dual-boot configuration several months ago, then decided it wasn't for me so I converted the space it was using to a partition I could use within Windows as a virtual disk to store video files. This worked really well and it's been a few months since I did that. However I left the Linux bootloader LILO in place. I had it set up to auto-load Windows within a few seconds anyway, so I didn't mind.

But just last night I was editing a video and had saved the MPG file that I was planning on copying to DVD, onto that virtual drive partition. When I was through the partition was nearly full, with several gigabytes used and only a few megabytes available. Then I shut down the computer and turned it on this morning only to find I couldn't start Windows, although it appears all my files are intact and CHKDSK found no errors. I'm wondering if maybe there wasn't quite enough space available and some bits of files jumped across the partition onto the MBR? I have no idea, I'm just throwing out my random thoughts, sorry. But my standard C: partition has plenty of free space. Total hard disk capacity is 80 GB from the factory, in case that helps.

Can you help me at least figure out how to log into Windows to back up my files? Thanks!

Just as few sites, sorry to read that you didn't like Linux.
