Anyone familiar with MS Virtual PC 2004?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have the trial version and I like it. In the full version can I set up a Virtual Machine to act as a DHCP server and then connect 2 or more Virtual Machines up to it to form a Domain?

Thanks

I heard about somebody doing something like that......... he used it for demonstrations to show to hack a domain. but I'm not sure.

That's funny. LOL My reasons are a bit more benevolent. I'm working on my A+ and I hate going into the Learning Center because the computers there are Boat Anchors. I can do at home what I can do there in 40% of the time!

how is this going to help you with A+? Last time I took A+ training, it was almost all hardware!

Acctaully I use Virtual PC on my home PC 2 run a Virtual 2003 server with AD off of it, it works very well. I also use it for most of my linux testing.

Zakir,

I don't know how long ago it was that you took the A+ training but nowadays, it is two sections part 1 is Core Hardware Part 2 is OS Technologies. Installing em', upgrading
em' Basic administration of em' a bit of Networking em' stuff like that. The particular Lab I'm working on requires me to network a Win XP Pro and Win 2k Pro machine with a seperate DHCP server. Then edit the BOOT.INI file and several other things.

Yea, I really like the program, it's easy to use and really does what it says it can do.

Thing that went bump in the night...

The answer to your question is yes, it should be possible, aI was at an MS convention and a guy was doing the same thing, the only thing that would limit you is your RAM since unless you have a gig or more running 2-3 VM is a resource hog. I can run 2 at one time, with 512 RAM, as long as one of the OS's only use up 128 and the other 256.

ATM I have two VM's running using 25% of my installed RAM. I have NT 4.0 Workstation and 2KPro. Each is using 128 MB. NT 4.0 will go though. I think I need to get the full version and install the VM Additions. I may as well throw in another 512MB Memory while I'm at it.

Won't I need to have Win 2k Server installed on one VM in order to function as DHCP server? I don't think XP Pro or 2K Pro have that function?

the best XP Pro can do is a very simple DHCP server via Internet Connection Sharing. If you want more control, you'll have to get a server version of Windows with the whole IIS suite

don't trust the DHCP in xp.......... That's really interesting that you have to know XP and 2k stuff now. all I had to know was how to install windows 98........

Yea. Alot of the people at the learning center are experienced professionals just staying current in their MCP certs and they can't believe how hard the A+ test is now. People that study their asses off come out of there with 40 points to spare. It's an incredible amount of memorization, almost to the point of being ridiculous.

how much does it cost to take the test?
