WINDOWS XP: Removing CDROM drive
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all,
I am trying to physically remove my flaky CDROM drive from my XP machine.
However, after doing so, Windows XP would not boot properly. I can boot into safe mode okay though.
Note that before I physically removed the drive, I had "remove the device" in Device Manager already.
Also note that XP would boot fine if I reconnect the drive. Is this HAL or some h/w database that XP is using to keep track of devices installed?
So, is there an easy way for me to remove the drive?
Cheers,
Ian

when it goes into safe mode, wander over to the device manager and remove your missing drive. that should remove it permanently.

Thanks Redwench for the tip.
After physically removing the CDROM drive and booting into Safe Mode, the Device Manager does not list the CDROM drive anymore. Am I missing something here?
Should I reconnect the drive, boot into Safe Mode, remove from Device Manager and then physically remove the drive?
Thanks for your help!

its not listed as an old device? odd
no, that wont make a difference. no clue why its booting into safe mode more than once.

So what other alternatives do I have?
I had tried...
1. Booting into safe mode
2. Remove the drive from Device Manager
3. Shut down computer
4. Remove CDROM drive physically.
5. Turn on computer but still get a blue screen followed by a reboot...
Any other ideas and suggestions? Thanks a lot for the help!

youre going to need a repair installation, or even a format and install.

What about the BIOS? I know that on my comp when I installed another drive I had to go into the BIOS and detect it before windows could detect it...What if it's backwards in this case? Before you reformat and stuff: 1. remove the drive and make sure it is gone from d.manager 2. restart and go into the BIOS and look for where it lists all drives 3. there should be a button you can hit to make it detect all connected drives at once, or just do a manual detect of the drives 4. Make sure the drive you removed did not and does not show up in the BIOS 5. don't change anything else, save end exit bios
hope it helps, it's worth a shot

i think it may be first in your boot sequence. try getting to the bios and see if it is the first to boot from. if you remove it and the bios is looking for it, your computer will act retarded like you are describing. happened to me when i bought my first cdrw drive. youd think it would just move on and find the next drive , but if theres nohing else to boot from, it would make sense.

he boots into safe mode, just not normal mode. thats a windows problem

Thanks everybody for the tips and info.
I have no luck with the BIOS either. "Removed" it from the BIOS by setting the drive type to "none" and still Windows XP complained and would not boot normally. It can boot into safe mode only.
Oh well, looks like I will have to do a installation repair as suggested by redwench.
Thanks for your time!
