recovered files still unusable

Win2K Pro with SP 4:
Slave HD problem. I renamed the HD so I coudl get an MP3 to install. When I renamed the HD some of the larger folders, subfolders and files were renamed with gibberish and weird characters. These were totally unusable. I did a chkdsk /r on the HD (at the suggestion of a techie) and recovered the files. But they are numbered without extensions or type. I still can't use them as I can't rename them, nor can I open them with any application.
Any ideas of how to use these files?
