Newbie with Explorer problem

Hi folks, running an "older" machine, a 4 year old HP Pavilion with windows 98.
About once every 3 months, my Explorer opens and loads the home page. It then freezes to a keyboard/ mouse lock on that page. The only way out is a Ctl/Alt/Del. I tried differ home pages and even booting to windows update. Same result, boot up and 5 seconds later a lock-down. This mind you is only happening inside Explorer. The rest of the computer is running normal. Cold boots, reloading original software, tools and so on have no impact. The ONLY way to fix this and I have done it 7 or 8 times this year is a TOTAL reformat the hard drive and reinstall original software. So this is NOT a hardware problem.
It appears NOT to be an Explorer problem, since it's fixed upon reloading original software.
The good news is I'm getting very good at fixing trashed machines and the bad news is that I'm losing all my data. Just a recap, Inside Explorer, happens every couple of months, total lockdown of that page only. Only fix is a Reformat hard drive.
Any help here?
Thanks Bob

Why not try Mozilla Firefox instead? A much better browser.

that pretty much indicates it IS an explorer problem. or a windows problem, which amounts to about the same thing.
are you running all your maintenance programs on a regular basis?
