Will sempron cut it?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am looking into buying a new pc for my friend. She dosnt have much money and isnt a gamer...
I live in a countrey that doesnt have soap (im just kidnig but it doesnt have alot of the hardware your used too in Europeand the USA).
Anyway She has what you would call 500$ TOPS (take in mind that hardware is more expansive here).
I wanted to go Athlon Xp but none of that for a resonable price.
So I went Sempron...
My question is this:
Will sempron 2800/2600 Cut it for ofice work and a bit of gaming (not hl2 or doom3, the once in a while RTS/Quest).

Im going to get 512MB ram, 80G SATA, GeForce fx 5200 and an asus MB with integrated soundcard.

Will this cut it?

If you have a diffrent System that I can buy for her it would be good too.
Please dont tell me how unexpencive A64 is, here it is.

Im not so sikedabout getting an intel based pc cuase its more $$$ and less preformance.

I woudld also like it if you cloud tell me a way I can save her money (difrent VGA card or something).

Thanks alot.

My sys:

Athlon 64 3400+
DFI lanparty UT nF3 250GB
512MB Corsair XMS
GeForce 5900XT
HEC 475W PSU
ThermalTake LanFire VM2000A

Im getting my new pc (for me not her) and its going too rock

why are you getting an 80 gigabyte SATA drive if it's a sempron?

AthlonXP's aren't made anymore, they're all Sempron now. As far as I know, a Sempron is just as fast as the AthlonXP's used to be (probably even a bit faster, since they're newer). If a regular (ATA133) hd is cheaper than a SATA one, I'd go for the ATA133, you probably won't notice a difference in speed anyway. The only thing I'm not sure about is the video card, but I haven't tested an FX5200 enough to really say anything about it.

I have spent lots of time with my 2 A-XPs and my 2600 Sempron. I use my Sempron as a backup gaming computer for when we need an extra one at lan parties. it works great. and...it cost me about $450 to build!

that system should work great for what she needs it to, and if she's doing office work I highly reccomend getting a sata drive. there is a huge increase in speed.

any cpu at that speed will cut it for what you describe, its only heavy gaming or other demanding programs that require much thought in the selection of a cpu.

Sempron is iffy at best. While in most games it will cut it, in games like Rome Total War and Command and Conquer generals (Both RTS) It will lag. RTS's are heavily cpu dependant. I would trust a fx5200 to power any game.

HardOCP did a very good job with the use of $500. First link is the whole article second is what they picked.

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzU4LDU=

The only thing they didn't account for is hdd. There is no real increase in speed with a standard sata drive-7200rpm 8mb cache and a standard pata drive both are 7200rpm/8mb cache. And Semprons aren't necessarily faster, the only have 256k cache while the barton core had 512k.

Find us a european online store and we will help you pick something out.

Thx, But I dont live in Europ I live in Isreal Want the cheapest store here its www.ksp.co.il (there is an english interface).

Max price = 2000NIS (if its 2100 its ok too).

Btw My friend has a Fx 5200 and it runs HL with no problem... (cs:s with 50 fps) so I wouldnt really worry about the VGA Card.

Kinda hard to read, but if you want you can just take away 1x512 of ram to make it less.

It is Kinda hard to read, but from what I can see hear this thing doesnt have a vga card no optical drive and no case... If add these things its 2600 so its kinda to high but I will look in too that again.
Thx!

A Sempron will fit the bill absolutely fine for what you want, don't let people convince you otherwise. I've built several machine for friends using 2200 or 2300 Semprons and dirt cheap M848ALU PC Chips MOBO's. The FX 5200 will be fine for occasional gaming and as long as they're not intending playing HL2 at a 1024x768 they should be fine.

I would not go with a SATA drive, but an ATA 133 drive. There is a forum around here with information about this.
