What to do with my "notebook"...
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I gotta Compaq Armada M700 laptop, or "notebook" that I've had for a couple of years.
I'm gonna do 4 things to it:
1.) Get more memory, as it only has 97 MB of RAM;
2.) Get a faster compatible microprocessor (It's got a Pentium II);
3.) Get a new HD (my hard drive's about 6.02 GB; want at least 10 GB but striving
for a 20 GB HD)
4.) Buy a stronger cooling fan for the processor
I know about re-imaging computers and all that, but I'm a little iffy on partitioning.
Seeing as I'm a NooBie up in here (yeah, don't rub it in!), anybody got any suggestions 'bout how to go this.

Just give it to those computer shops and tell em that you want those four things and get them to do all the thinking for you. Unless of course if you want to save some money, are you planning on just working (Flash, adobe, word, etc.) or are you planning to play a few games? (Laptops arent for playing games but some people does it anyways). Im not exactly sure but I think you could only change the hard drive without taking the whole laptop apart...

I wanna do a little of both. I'd just install a few games and all the other space would be used for DL-ing some academic software that I got from my school. The thing is, my laptop works, I just wanna upgrade it. It was originally a Win98, which I converted to Win2K. I'm trying to upgrade it, seein as I wanna DL some more software like Macromedia, Oracle, Microsoft C++, and so forth. I only got 6.02 GB, I already got 2.87 GB filled up with classwork, some music player software (Winamp, DiVx), WinZip. Looking at Microsoft Visual Basic, which is about a GB, I think I'm gonna need more space.
Also, I'd rather work on it myself, you know, get more of a feel of what ur laptop can do when you work on it urself.

About the microprocessor or CPU,
Wouldn't there be tools available to safely remove the microprocessor? Although it would probably void the warranty, my warranty expired a while ago.

2 things.
1. Its very nice that you want too "do it yourself" but frankly, Im not sure its so good for you or actualy anyone that isnt 100% sure on how to do something like that. Notebooks arent PC's they are alot harder to upgrade/remove/replace parts. I would recomend you let a pc shop or a professional do it.
2. From what I see its time for a new Laptop. If you wanna run WinXp its (as MC say) 256MB minimum. If you want your laptop to run smoothly I wouldent go less then 512MB, Since its a laptop
256 is kind of exceptable.
If you have the money go for a new value laptop dell have some good ones, at www.newegg.com I can tell you they have really cheap and good Acer laptops, they give you More bang for you buck then I have ever seen in the laptop market.
Hope It works out for you!

Hmm, the last time I ordered a new computer (2004) the case was completly cracked and a corner is chipped. It would be better if you just find a laptop in your local area, unless if the one on net is cheaper.
