Upgrading Video Card

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm finally going to break down and buy a new video card.

I figure that the max I'd want to spend on a card is around 200$.

So I did some searching, I remember that the 9800 Pro was pretty popular a while back, and it goes for around 175$. The x600 on the other hand, goes for just over 100$, and is a generation newer.

I have an AGP8X port, no PCI Express, so which of these cards preforms better? Or is there a better card for around 200$?

Yes Radeon 9800 pro. 128 mb. Is still going strong.

And the Geforce 6600 GT, is also a card to consider.

Whatever card of these, you choose, you will have a very good card.
But if you choose the Geforce 6000 series, make sure, that your Powersupply have sufficient power.

Here is a calculator for your hardware: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp

And here is the prices for the cards, from Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/

Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/HDTV-Out, AGP 8X, Model "A6600 GT TDH" -RETAIL. 187 USD.

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -RETAIL. 165 USD.'

The X 600 PCI Express, is basically a PCI Express variant of Radeon 9600. so except for some new technical features and the double port speed. I still think that 9800 pro, will stand up pretty good to this card.

I would personally go for the 6600GT for the extra support of DX9

pffft, he can get that in the 9800 pro.

6s mostly. I would opt for the 6600.

Yeah, but the 6600gt offers SM 3.0 which the 9800pro or even the new ati cards do not offer.

and of course, hes going to be using that on a system thats several years old.

it's better to get a nice card and then gradually upgrade around it then get a mediocre card and have to upgrade it in a year. more cost effective as well.

The system is new, atleast mostly. I just never spent the extra money on a new video card.

EDIT: I should point out I didn't spend the money because a friend lent me his 9200, which he needs back now.
