motherboard problem...would greatly appreciate help

Hey all,
new to the site...hopin' for a little help
got a gigabyte 7n400 (k7 triton) motherboard that's givin' me problems.
every time i start up, it tries to boot from cd, and refused to boot from the hard drive, even when i set first boot device to HDD-0 and all others disabled...so it gives me the "BOOT DISK FAILURE. PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND RESTART"
clearing CMOS defaulted the bios but it still ignored the boot sequence and went to try the cd first
an odd thing to note...i've got windows on my maxtor hard drive, and i've got another western digital in there...when starting, where it normally lists the primary master and slave as "Maxtor (plus serial number)" and "WDC (plus serial number)", it now shows "Maxtmr (plus jumbled serial number)" and "RDM (plus jumbled serial number)"
it's also showing that both drives have a capacity of just 8191 MB...which just isn't true
yeah weird....i run the same system on a different motherboard and it works fine...same processor, different type of RAM but that wouldn't make a difference would it? is it possible that the IDE cable has something wrong with it? but then it might have the same problem with the other motherboard right? this motherboard is much faster and nicer than the one that i'm currently running that works ok. on top of that it's compatible with my DDR SDRAM 400MhZ instead of the pc133 that i'm using now...both only 512MB but i'd much rather be using the DDR

any tips? ideas? suggestions? comments? anything would be a huge help and greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

you do have to partition and format, then reinstall windows when you switch motherboards. its rare windows will boot if you move the drive to another computer.

it's worked before where i could just do a straight swap and it worked fine...the motherboard isn't even making an attempt to boot from the hard drive..it just goes straight to cd no matter what i tell it... if i do need to re-format then i just want to know why the motherboard wants a fresh installation of windows, and why the startup would display weird jumbled versions of the hard drive names, and also why it would show both of their capacities as 8191MB (one's 80GB...one's 120GB - Maxtor and Western Digital respectively)

thanks!

Heed the Red, for she is wise beyond her years.
You will prolly have to do a reformat. Sorry.

If you've reset the CMOS this probably won't work but have a look at the drive settings as it sounds as if it's not being detected correctly (LBA or something like that being switched off?). If your board has it try auto detecting the drives.
