Choosing a new computer?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok so I need a little help I wanna buy myself a new computer, for the motherboard I'm gonna be fine because I'm gonna buy a good one I just need to decide between Intel and AMD, and socket 754,939, or 468 or 775.
Ok so I've always had Athlon XPs from 1600+ to 2400+ I've tried them all and I pretty much was never disappointed, neither did I ever have any problems, but I was looking at the pentium 4 recently, and I'm planning to change motherboard and CPU so I compared
and came to the conclusion that :
An athlon 64 works at a slower FSB than the p4
For a faster FSB and a faster clock, the p4 has a better price. (2800 only works at 1.8 and a 2.4 p4 works at 2.4 for the same price...)
How do I select my CPU, (the motherboard will change socket so I must choose my cpu first)

The first is false. The Athlon 64's FSB is on-die at 1600mhz while P4 are onboard 800/1066
An athlon64 2800+ will absolutely lay waste to a P4 2.4ghz. P4 doesn't have the better price because the 2800+ performs like a 2.8ghz p4 and even better.
Read some reviews on the athlon 64 line. It is very fast. And if you actually look at comparisons of people who have like a 3.0ghz p4 and a 3000+ A64 most will agree that the a64 is faster.

I went from a 2.6 P4 to a 3200+ S754 A64 and the A64 continues to blow my mind with the speed it pumps out. Intel keeps claiming all this HT stuff but...I can WoW and Rainbow Six 3 at the same time and still use Firefox to browse with no noticed slowdown in browser speed.
I would HIGHLY reccomend an A64 platform for your next pc, you will be VERY pleased with it.

you seem obsessed with clock speed, which is only a reasonable basis for comparison if youre looking at chips with the same architecture.

Thanks guys, the thing about 'It performs like a 2800 even if its clocked at 2.0 or 1,8 still is better' helped me differenciate the two.
Alright so athlon 64 it is ! Thanks!
I installed two motherboards like these on peoples computers and was looking forward to doing the same what do you guys think aobut the
MSI K8TNEO-FSR ? It has both IDE and SATA, 3 DDR and it takes Socket 754, which for me would be enough, I won't be doing 'SUPER GAMING' I'm looking forward to counters-trike source, half-life two, some old games also, and battlefield desert combat along with lineage and americas army.
So would htat motherboard and an athlon 64 be fine for what I need ?

S754 is more than enough for now. I use mine for everything i do just make sure you geta video card to fit the bill, unless you already have one.

There's this motherboard by ASROCK that supports both SOCKET 754 and 939 for future expansion, could that also be a good idea?
Or a normal motherboard is good?

I would get a mobo with an nVidia chipset or at least a Via one. That motherboard by Asrock uses a ULi chipset (which is I guess related to ALi?) that I would be wary of for a performance computer.

Don't get it, its not even worth it. Pick one or the other.

I've had very bad experiences with both of the ASRock motherboards I have owned. I'd stick with the major brands like MSI, Abit, Gigabyte, Epox is pretty good too.

I love my Epox, i was a bit wary at first but read the reviews and for the price i went for it.

MSI and DFI are your top mobos at the moment.

What about those people that say 'Screw asus all they do is break' ?
As I said earlier, I was also interested in the MSI k8T and K8N series, they have all I need, support 754 which is plenty for me.
I can get them from 96CND to 138CND Is it worth taking the MSI series?

that's a good price in canadian dollars. I'd go with MSI over DFI. even though I use 2 DFI boards and 1 MSI board. I prefer the DFIs but the MSIs are a lot more user friendly and don't require a bios flash to run right

huh? asus makes some of the most dependable boards in the business. of course, they have their occasional pos as well.

Agreed, ASUS for the win eheh Ihave had 2 asus boards, one has been running for err 4 years solid and not a inch of trouble. The other is a great board. I always advise ppl to go asus ( personaly preference though)

But beforce I change, I'm still working on this Athlon 1600+ (1400mhz)
I make overclock tests, and I achieved this with an AERO 7 Coolermaster, a homemade little fan I put next to the heat sink, and a dual fan CPU
I got 1700mhz at 36celsius stable on games
Is that good?

Yes asus boards are dependable. But the dependability and customer service from what ive heard has been going down alot lately.

If you pick ABIT, ASUS or MSI, you will get a good board, whatever you choose.
My ASUS P4P 800 SE, never have caused me any problems. It's rock steady and have many nice feats. That's more than I can say about the Albatron board I had before the ASUS!
The Albatron, whas more "Rocky Horror", than Rock steady. lol.

MSI, Asus, DFI, Abit are all good and stable boards.
I have a DFI lanparty UT nF3 250GB that is SUPER EXCELLENT!
It has the best overcloking solutions, fastest benchmark scores for the S754 MB's (as said on the box).
My DFI has 8CH sound and its really can compare with Creative Audigy 2 Value card's (I wont say its a Audigy 4 pro or something like that).
It is very user friendly doesnt need a BIOS Flash t work at all.
If you go S754 go with the DFI, or any Nf3 250GB baords those are great chips and they have onbaord stuff supported.
PS stay aya from SIS, I have had trobble with them.

I've had my computer with an AMD Athlon since 1999. I can't say I've ever been disappointed with it. It's quick and sturdy. On the other hand my parents have a Pentium and even doing simple daily tasks it doesn't seem to stand up to my Athlon. This is also their second compared to my number 1.
When I build myself a computer, AMD Athlon will be going in.

So I was looking at the DFI LAN PARTY also but the 939, I want something to last and I have to decide between
1gb of ram
or 2 x 512
What will run better?
They've said for a little while that 'one stick' is better than 'two'
What do you guys think?
Posted by: redwench
if you cant run dual channel, it makes no difference in terms of performance; its just a cost issue. obviously 2x512 is better if you run dual channel.
