If you know what motherboard you got ? (Manufacturer and model?) You just go to the manufacturers home and dowload a new driver.
If you dont know what mobo you got?
Download "Everest Home" from this link: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/everest.html.
And then just klick the "Motherboard button".
Keep this program, by all means. As it can provide all info on your PC.
Could be handy in the future, if you wanna upgrade your PC. Or get some new problems.

As you say you got an MSI motherboard. Just use Everest to check out the model of the MSI board.
Then visit MSI home
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppo...list.php?kind=1
There, you should be able to download a new soundcard driver.

I have also tried to find a suitable soundcard driver for you. But it seems tuff to find one.
I would suggest, that you get the Creative "Sondblaster Live!" PCI soundcard. This is about 25 USD at Walmart. And mount it yourself. This is a nice cheap soundcard, that you always can find drivers for. And you also will get better soundquality, by doing this.

but was told I need WIN 98 second edition, but I am running WIN 98. Is there away around having to purchase this WIN 98 second edition software?

Hmm, One thing you both can try, is to download direct X 9.0 from microsoft home, and install / reinstall it.
