AMD 760 To Be Discontinued?

A shocking headline, especially after the success the AMD 760 has achieved, but a German computing site named Heise Online has the scoop. Here's a translated snip: (Some modifications made for clarity.)
The chip manufacturer AMD has officially acknowledged not to manufacture the Athlon AMD-760 chipset any longer. Firm speaker January Guetter sees no need for the chipset, because there are a sufficient number of alternative chipsets from Nvidia, SiS, ALi, and VIA are available. Main boards with the chipset like the Abit KG7, Asus A7M266, DFI AK76, Epox EP-8K7A, Gigabyte GA-7DX, or MSI K7 Master will only be available from current stock piles.
The original site can be found here. I translated the article using BabelFish from Altavista. Thanks to Ace's Hardware for the link. The AMD 760 MP will still be available, for the time being.

It's sad to see one of the best AMD chipsets to just disappear. Let's hope this isn't the end, although I can see AMD cutting out some products due to their large third quarter loss.

Seems pretty stupid to discontinue making a chip that has already gone through research and development. You would think they would want to get their money back out of it.

Agreed. It isn't surprising though. I had heard that AMD wanted to get out of the motherboard chip making business to focus more on their CPUs. The reason they went into it in the first place was because third party chip makers did not want to originally support Athlons, thus forcing AMD to make one that would show other motherboard chip makers how good their CPUs were (and to help sell them to the general public).

Yeah AMD isn't as big as Intel for example. So it's better for them to concentrate on one thing so they can assign all their resources into 1 or 2 things. As Chako said, the main reason the AMD 760 even showed up was because vendors were rushing to support the Pentium 3 and 4 line before focusing on the Athlon chipset platforms.
Now with a variety of chipsets available and with some performing a lot faster than the AMD760, they don't need to focus on it so much anymore.
I just hope VIA and a few others took notes on the fine quality that the AMD760 was.
