Paperport program not responding

My PaperPort 8.0 is installed and was working fine. All of a sudden, when I begin a scan, it starts the scan, hangs up for about 1 minute, completes the scan but no image appears on the desktop. The computer is then in a suspended mode. When I try to close PaperPort, the message appears that the program is not responding. I have tried everything. What is the problem?
