I'm tying to uninstsall the XP service pack 2 from my laptop because I think it slows it down. Has anyone here uninstalled this service pack before and, if so, were there any problems?
When I try to remove it I get a message listing several apps which it says may not work properly after uninstall.
Thanks,

Thanks, but I have no idea what your reply means. Did you intend to post a link with it?

What i mean, is that As Service pac 2, have a big impact on your Windows installation. Not just the security. It´s very hard to tell, if you will have all your programs working. Or if you even will get an volatile Windows after an uninstallation of your SP2. And it is also depending on WHAT kind of programs you got installed.
And come to think of it. It's probably something else, slowing down your laptop.
Like Spyware and a lot of unnessisary programs, running in the background. Download SIS Sandra. And use the "Fine Tune Wizard" to determine, what you can shut down?
Then go: START + RUN. In RUN, type msconfig, and then click the "services" Tab. And uncheck, what Sandra tells you is O.K. to shut down. Then reboot.
Try this, before you start to uninstall SP2. And if you still are going to unninstall. Back up all your important files on CD:s or DVD:s, before you do that.
Sorry, that I whas a bit cryptic in my previous ansver. It has in the middle of the night, and I whas pretty tired.

sp2 is part of your OS, and like he said, there is no way to predict how your comp will run if you remove it.

Thanks again. I believe you're right. I think my laptop is a bit sluggish because it needs another stick of memory. I'm not going to uninstall sp2. I appreciate your support.

Thanks redwench,
You're right. I think it's too risky to mess with so I'm going to leave it alone. I appreciate your advice.

Service Pack 2 wont make your system run slower .. If you feel adventureous you can however disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) which run code in an managed environment .. Its a nice feature to prevent from malicious programs but slows down the system a bit ..
Anyways ..If you want to disable it do this :
Open System Properties > Advanced > Startup & recovery >
Select Edit to edit the boot.ini file, it will have a string called /NoExecute=optout, change this code to /execute, only change this nothing else or Windows will not work, now reboot & go again to
Open System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Data Execution Protection, if every thing is grayed out or unavailable then U have successfully Disabled DEP ..

WindowsXP doesn't create too many problems, 95% of the time when someone complains to me about SP2 not working, or causing errors, it turns out that user is using outdated drivers or software that shouldn't have been run under XP anyway.
Don't uninstall it man, you are asking for trouble with the flaws in SP1.
If your computer is going to slow for you, more ram! it's help your laptop battery time anyway.
