motherboard question

Hi everyone,
I'm a new poster to this site, although I've been reading this forum for a while.
As a self learned "fix-your-own", this forum has been very helpful.
Now, I have a problem I cannot fix myself,
I have a HP 9694c, AMD K7. full specs here (http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Deskto...lay_~full_specs)
getting a little old I know, but not obsolete by any means.
When I turn the computer on, the fan starts and the hard drive spins for a few seconds and then nothing, the whole thing idles forever.
I tried everything, removed components after components to the bare minimal, same thing happens.
I also don't hear any beeps, or clicks when turned on.
My instinct tells me it's the motherboard, but I don't know how to test it or make sure my diagnostic is right.
It might also be the processor I guess, but i did replace a memory card the other day and it slipped out of the slot and may have scratched the board.
Anyway, if anyone has any insights to offer, I would greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
As you have tested component, after component, I also would say the motherboard.
The things left to do there is trying the reset jumper.
You may also check out the powersupply.

if it worked fine before you replaced the dimm, and had an oops, thats 95% the cause.

I would say power supply. You may also have bad capacitors on the motherboard. Check to make sure there are no capacitors that are "oozing." If there are, then you know it's the motherboard - replace it.

Does the bios post when it boots up?If it does and it sit idle try the hard drive in another computer if it sits idle the hard drive is no more good.If you get no bios at start up reflaash the chip.http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...cname=c00007682

In case an item was changed in the BIOS, such as the primary display device setting, use the following steps to reset the BIOS back to its default configuration or update it if necessary.
Turn on the computer and press the F1 key when the keyboard light comes on. Wait five seconds.
NOTE: On certain Compaq Presario PCs prior to 2002 it may be necessary to press the F10 key instead of F1.
Press the F5 key to restore the default settings of the BIOS. Wait five seconds.
Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit from the BIOS.
The monitor should now display items received from the computer. If not, find and download the latest BIOS update if one is available for your PC.
If a BIOS update was not available or the monitor is still blank, continue to the next step.

There's no response, no loading whatsoever, so the BIOS is not an option,
as for the power supply, I checked it on an another system , works fine.
I've never done it, but I'll try the reset jumper, I have nothing to lose, refurbished parts are pretty cheap anyhow.
If it is the processor, that's another ball of wax.
Thank you for your help.

I would bet a buck on that the mobo's have kicked the bucket. It very rare, that the CPU dies, if you have'nt done a over clock going wrong, or the cpu cooling fan have stopped working. And the accident you did have with the RAM and the mobo, did'nt improve things.
If you are going to get a new board?
Here is a nice cheap, socket A mobo, for your AMD :

Just remember, to get some thermal paste for the CPU, when you move it to the new motherboard! Clean the CPU and the cooler, with a lint free cloth or the tip of a Q-tip. and acetone for ex.
Apply the Thermal paste, using a razorblade. The paste should be applied in a paperthin layer on top of the CPU.
If you want the best thermal paste. Get Arctic silver 5. It is expensive yes. But you will improve the cooling ability. If you dont care, any ol' thermal paste will do.

But as your mobo, use the old SDR RAM, You will have to get a DDR 400 RAM. PC 3200 Stick.
Here is a cheap, very good one :
CORSAIR ValueSelect 256MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory - Retail. $23.00. newegg
CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400. $48.00.
Later on, you can get an identical Corsair Value select. 256mb ( 512 mb) RAM stick, and then you will be able to run "Dual Channel setup" That will enhance the bandwith of the RAM drastically.
As you probably still use the Windows 98 SE, that came with your computer. You will manage good with 256 mb. But if you get a 512mb, you are ready for win XP and it still, will improve your gaming, if you hang on to Win 98 SE.
You dont tell, if you got a agp video card?
If you got one, you will have to disable the integrated Geforce MX card on this MSI mobo first.
If you dont have an AGP video card. You should consider getting one later on.
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro. 128 mb. Is a very nice Video card, that have become VERY cheap,
since the arrival of the PCI - Express.
124 USD. at newegg. The price before, whas about 200 USD!

thanks for your replies again,
you're not going to believe what the problem was,
a faulty memory card,
I have another HP pavillion lying around which I use for e-mails...etc
I took both PCs apart and tried everything swapping back and forth.
At the end, and as a act of desperation, I swapped cards and abracadabra...
go figure
Thank you for your help though.
Peace

Well, that proves the old thesis. With PC:s, you never know!
But it whas good, it "just" whas the memory stick instead of something worse.
