Such an unfortunate problem

Hi all,

I'm very sad to announce that I stepped on my Radeon 9800XT....I work on my linoleum (i think that's how you spell it) kitchen floor...static free...but on the floor nonetheless...enough said...the only visible problem is this...one broken-off capacitor on the very corner. I'm sure that if it can be replaced then the card will work again, but the existing connectors on the broken-off capacitor are too short now to be re-attached. it was a clean break though...no scratching or chipped pieces...the whole capacitor snapped right at the point where it's soldered onto the chip. I suppose my only problem at this point is where to get a capacitor that meets the exact specs as the one that radeon used...i've looked everywhere i could think of....no luck though... any ideas? any alternative ideas of what to do? my 9700 pro ain't too bad but now i've had to drop my old 64MB card into my second system which doesn't work when you're trying to network games...please help! thanks in advance!

Hi!
The only resonable thing to do, would be to get a new card unfortunatly.
Trying to mend a broken videocard, is a almost impossible task.

Leadtek A6600 GT TDH Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail. costs $151.00. at newegg. I just bought this card. And it is incredible! I had a MSI FX 5900 XT. 128 mb before. And whas'nt convinced, that the difference would be THAT big. But boy! Whas I surpriced when I booted up with this beauty inside the PC!

Or you can get a Sapphire Radeon 9800PRo for 124 USD. at newegg. That is almost the same you had before. And you can always O.C. it with Powerstrip, to the 9800XT:s speed.

um the 9800xt cost $500...not quite ready to give up on it or replace it with a card that has half the memory...it's a 256MB card

if it cost me $150 to fix it i think it'd be more worth it than replacing it with a $150 card

you think there would be a signifcant downgrade in performance if i were to fix it?

Dont forget that the prices on agp cards have dropped quite much, since the release of PCI Expess.
I just saw a 9800xt 256 meg, for 179 USD, at newegg.

And if you make it, and it works stable...No, I dont think, that you will have any performance downgrades.

wow $179??? jeez i gotta check that out... i don't feel too bad since i bought the card so long ago... hey thanks for the info...i'm at work right now but check back later today... gonna go home in an hour and attempt a repair as best i can... i'll let ya know! thanks again!

You might as well op for something bigger and greater if you're going to buy a new one. The nVidia 6600 series mentioned by goranpaa is well worth its price. And since he found one for an even cheaper price than the 9800XT, I'd recommend buying it. Word on the street is that the 6600 gets close to the levels of the 6800, although not the ultra.

I agree. With the 6600gt you have GDDR 3 memory, for ex and a better support for Direct X. 9.0. And I think, that my old card, MSI 5900XT whas as fast and had about the same picture quality as the Radeon 9800XT.
But I saw the difference, when I got the 6600gt! I can really recommend it.

haha i am victorious!

through some sort of miracle from above i have been able to fix it!

get this...i took the original capacitor that had broken off...clipped the prongs from a new capacitor and with a sewing pin made two precise holes next to the little nubs that used to be connectors for the original capacitor...i just stuck the snipped connectors into the hole, soldered it back onto the chip...and it worked...i swear it's a miracle...

so for now (at least until i actually need a new card) i'm gonna stick with the 9800XT / 9700 Pro combo

thanks for all the great advice guys...i had no idea these cards sold for so little nowadays and that might inspire me to replace the 9700 Pro sooner rather than later

thanks again!

You could be about to do some serious damage to your system. One of the primary purposes of a capacitor is to help filter out unwanted DC voltage. Given where you said it was, without having looked at a techincal diagram for your card.

Anyway, general procedure, here, obtain a technical diagram for your circuit, and possible a parts list. Usually this is available for say a tv or vcr in the service manual, for a graphics card I do not know where to get one

If he soldered the cap back on correctly, nothing will happen to the system. Alway go bigger in mF rating never smaller. I've done this operation to motherboards with oozing caps before. After the replacements the board works 100%.
