A couple months ago I bought an AMD 64 3200+ with an ASUS K8VSE Deluxe mobo. I'm getting some strange readings on the speed of the CPU. System Properties of XP Pro says any of the following: 990 MHz/2.2 GHz or 1.78 GHz. Sandra says 1000 MHz. ASUS PC Probe says 2.2 GHz (it is a 2.2 GHz CPU) I had some heat issues but have solved them by adding another chassis fan. Temps are good now but were running hot for what I guess was long enough to do some possible damage. The CPU temps were a bit hot, I forget exactly what they were. But I'm thinking the CPU either fries or it doens't. Or could it just get a little screwy from high temps, not high enough to fry it but high enough to screw it up?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it may have become a little screwy from the high temps. But it also could be a slightly screwy temp sensor from the beginning.

Well, after monitoring my temps after adding that nice 120mm fan for intake, my temps have been just fine. I guess I'm looking for a definitive way to see just what speed the CPU is running at. I downloaded Sandra Lite and it says 1GHz on the CPU. I called the place I bought the components at and the feeling I got was "tuff crap" Lots of silence on the other end of the phone. Not a good sign... LOL
I'm starting to think the only way to test this is with a "known good" CPU... Which means go and buy one... LOL

Have you tried CPU Z? Passmark? Everest Home? and Motherboard monitor 5.
Try these, before you go and buy a new CPU. Then at least, you can say that you tried them all.
EDIT: Dont you have a hardware monitor inside BIOS?

then its fine. third party software can range all over the place in accuracy, especially for recent releases. the software provided with the board is reading what you say the chip is, so id go with that.

I do. And it says I'm ok... If your BIOS is wrong... it's time to format or flash...
