Hey guys!
A cousin of mine, is going to buy a new videocard.
He can't afford the 6600GT.
So the choise, stands between a Sapphire 9800pro 128mb and a ASUS 6600TD. 256mb.
The mobo is MSI MS6728-110
He have 1 gig of PC 2700 Samsung
A P4 Northwood. 2.6 GHz
And his video card, is a FX 5700 U. 128 mb
Windows XP home.
Wich is the best choise?
And what does "TD" stands for?
Is ASUS a good video card maker?
Edit: He's no DOOM or HL Gamer. But are into strategy games.
Here are the spec, for the ASUS card:
GeForce 6600
Video Memory 256 MB/128 MB DDR

I must make this matter of choise just a little bit more tricky, I guess?
Now, he mailed me and asked if Radeon X700. 256 mb. AGP is an even better choise?

Well, I have a Radeon 9800 Pro, which in my opinion has still maintained respectibility, even though it has been around for a year or so, maybe more. He can pick it up at a good price and it does not sound like he needs a big-ass honkin' vid card for the type of games he plays. Just my two cents worth.
:-)
As for your questions:
ASUS makes a fine Motherboard so I think I would give their vid card a try.
I have no idea what "TD" means.
GeForce 6600 looks like a nice card. If money isn't a problem it's a good choice.
:-)
I hope that helps.

No, that is true. He plays , like WOW, Rome Total War and the likes.

So, I guess, that maybe 9800Pro, will be better in performance to the X700. 256mb then?
Because, I , correct me if I'm wrong here. See the X700 as equal to 9700? With some improvements.
I myself, are also leaning towards 6600. But thats just my opinion.

I haven't checked the prices but my little 9800 Pro serves me well, but is only 128MB

I did a quick copy and paste. You can find the 9800 Pro for about $240.00 US.
I found a price range for the GeForce 256 MB card for about $180.00 US. So off the top of my head, I would say the GeForce is a better buy, but keep in mind I didn't shop too hard. :-)

Thanks, that narrows it down.

Then I wonder, If 128mb memory v.s. 256mb, is of any big significanse? Just thinking, that in strategy games, you can have a lot of soldiers and stuff running around. And magic and explosions.

Don't get a pci-e card his motherboard wont support it.

Thanks for the warning, Superfly. But I have checked both the 6600 .256mb and the X700. 256mb. And they are for sure AGP.

Well, Rome Total War is a fairly graphic intense game, not from any detailed graphics, but just from the fact that you might have 8000 or more individual soldiers on the field, maybe more! It is also a CPU/RAM hog too! It's a big game for sure. As far as the RAM on the Vid Cards goes, 256 is pretty much the standard now. Talk to someone using the GeForce 6600 and see what they say...
EDIT: For WoW, I have never played it, but I did play ALOT of FFXI. I would think it would have roughly the same requirements, maybe a bit more. If your friend has a High Speed connection, at least 512 M RAM and lots of coffee, he/she should be ok. LOL the 9800 Pro would do the job in that scenario easily.

Is this the regular x700? if so don't get it. The 6600 and radeon 9800 are pretty much the same except the 9800 doesn't have sm3. Not sure if the 6600 regular scores better or on the same level as the radeon 9800. Either the 6600 or 9800 will do him fine.

Rule it out the x700 pro isn't even better than the 9800 pro.
Posted by: goranpaa
So we can all agree, that the 6600. 256 mb, is the best choise? Or....?
Posted by: Superfly3176
As long as its not a downgraded 6600 regular. If its like a 6600se dont get it, google it "Asus 6600td agp review"
Posted by: goranpaa
Thanks Superfly! No, it's a regular. Pity he cant afford MSI:s "Diamond version". It´s said to be the fastest "regular" 6600, there is.
But it costs nearly as much as the GT.
Thanks again!
