CD-RW and DVD-ROM Issues

Have been wanting to put together a new computer for quite some time and finally accumulated the funds to do so, but now I am trying to get it to work.
The issue I am having is that my computer cannot detect either the CD-RW or DVD-ROM drives. They are both from Lite-on products. I am using an ASUS A8V DELUXE Socket 939 motherboard. While trying to figure out the problem I removed the IDE (but not power) from the DVD-ROM drive and when booting, its lights flashed and the button would open and close the door. When the IDE cable was in during a boot, however, it acted like it had no power. I replicated the same results both by switching which was unplugged from the IDE cable and by unplugging both at once. I then went and tried one of the other IDE cables and still the same problem. I have tried them both on Primary and Secondary IDE controllers (explanation of why I tried Primary further down) and tried both using cable select and setting one as slave and one as master with the jumpers.
I am at a loss to figure out what could cause this and was hoping perhaps one of you could help. As for my Harddrive situation, I have two 160 gig harddrives setup in a Raid 0 already using the raid configuration utility built into my motherboard.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read over all this. :-)

Try installing a new BIOS. This may help.

In your system bios, are the EIDE channels enabled? Also, look at the pins on the drives carefully you may have bent one. BtW, get one drive to work first and then install the other.
...just reread your original post...
Are the EIDE channels isolated from the SCSI controller (this is a bios setting). My mobo allows JBOD arrays between SATA and PATA.

The IDE channels are enabled. It was suggested by a friend of mine that perhaps the IDE controllers on the mother board are just bad. I have checked all the pins and they are where they are supposed to be. There are no SCSI controllers on the motherboard from everything I've read. The SATA RAID controller is isolated from it and is working fine. Everytime the computer posts, it recognizes the array.

Have you tried a new cable? Then set dvd rom as master then cdrom as slave on same cable on secondary ide channel.

check whether your drives are both set to either slave or master, you cannot set both devices to serve as master/slave under the same ide channel
make sure the drive detection on the ide channel that you are using is set to auto not "not intalled"
you can change this in your bios

Look for the advanced sub menus for the EIDE. This is called different things in different bios standards. Make sure that everything is on auto. Also, is this a brand new mobo, ie a newly released product or something that has been out for a while, call the manufacturer. You may have gotten a bad one.
You could try pulling the CMOS battery and letting defaults kick in.

I think that addresses _toe_tag_ and backlash's suggestions.

This is a brand new motherboard to me but has been on the market for several months now. You are, however, on the right track. :-)
Through purchasing a PCI IDE controller, I have determined that it is the onboard IDE controllers simply not working. Now the problem is conflicts between the PCI IDE controller and the rest of the comp while trying to boot a computer that has no OS and no drivers to tell it how to treat this card.
To finalize, case closed. I will send the motherboard back to ASUS and hope they repair or replace it for me. If not, I will buy one of the refurbished, OEM boards that Newegg.com has listed for $60 after shipping. Thanks again to all who read and even bigger thanks to those who offered suggestions.

The system I am using now, just recently built btw, had a similar problem, the PS2 ports did not work. As per the warranty, they had to replace it. Read the return policy for your mobo.
