standard video card woes on new old comp

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

here is the deal....i instaled a brand spankin new video card its a s3 trio 3d/2x with a cardexpert vgabios chip(agp). when i fire up the comp everything works fine. windows loads fine...after a few seconds the screen will flicker on and off and sometimes roll, or go out completly..when it does go out completly the status light on the moniter goes red like its on power save mode. if i unplug the moniter and plug it back in it will come back on but only for a a few sec. then its back to the same old routine. if i run setup at load it goes blank as soon as i enter the cmos or bois config screen. i played with the plug and made sure everything was seated..(jiggled it a bit) and nothing. but i did notice if i rotate the plug in i get a rolling display as half the pins make contact but as soon as all the pims are in it goes blank again.
the very first time i started the comp it worked ok with minor flickering. i was able to get to the display settings and noticed my only options for res were 16 colors and 680x480. i asumed it was because i havent installed the full driver yet but i cant keep the dislay long enough to install much of anything...
the monitor works fine on other comps...so i know its not the prob... i robbed the video card from the comp im on and it didnt work at all. all i got was three consecutive beeps out of the comp itself...any ideas about what the problem could be?

its hard to even explore the system cause i cant see anything...arrrrrgggg....

As you said, that you have tried 2 videocards in the AGP slot. And none of them work properly.
I would say, that your AGP is'nt healty. But the card you did rob from your other PC, maybe whas a lot newer one. So THAT could be compability probs, with the mobo.

Suggest, that you return the new videocard if possible. And get a PCI video card instead.

Suggestion:

Apollo Bloody Monster III. FX 5700LE. 128mb PCI
Or Jaton. FX 5700LE. 128mb PCI.

Or if you dont play any advanced games . Radeon 9200. 128 mb PCI.

Just dont confuse PCI Video cards with PCI Express! PCI Expr. wont fit your mobo.

The cards, you can find at newegg. net shop.

By the way. You havent got an integrated video card on that mobo?
Then you must disable it in BIOS first.

im pretty sure that i dont considering ther is nowhere to plug it in at....its an older mobo im having a hard time identifying it .. i know it has an award bios chip and an amd k6...500mhz from around 97-98...i have it working now but it does flicker once in a while and it still goes into sleep mode sparaticaly..it seems to have a patern tho...during startup it will auto detect the hd and cd-rom...do a memory count..then the moniter goes into sleep mode (led turns red and i can hear it power down)...then it comes back on for a sec. flickers during the win 98 startup screen and goes out completly again.then when it comes back in it is at the win desktop. from then on it will just flash about every 30- 45 sec. this comp is primarily for internet acces and word processing nothing fancy.

Hi again!

I saw you had 3 beeps.

3 beeps is an error message, But you'll need the MB manual to know what it means. Did you by any chance change the jumper settings on the mobo? The reset jumper or such.

Have you tried to use another monitor on this PC?

If you wanna identify the mobo. Download Everest Home.

Edit: You may find a manual, for the mobo, if you Google for a PDF manual.

i have a manual in pdf form already. but its limited to jumper settings and a basic layout of the board. and i have tried 3 monitors...a packard bell/ibm g-50/ and nec multisync xe...all three have the same prob but in the order listed the effects seem to decrease......go figure....it is an at style mobo if that helps any... and there are two major chipsets readind pc100 AGPro...i've gone as far as gutting the entire thing to the essentials and it changed nothing..im going to try the other video card once more. maybe it wasnt seated and thats what the three beeps were...i do appriciate the inpute...thanks....

O.K.

If it comes to, that you want a new motherboard. Check out E-bay. They have some socket 7. AMD K6. 500 MHz mobos, really cheap.
