As some of you know, I was not going to get WinXP. Well...after seeing a local advert from the local STAPLES store in the newspaper, I could not resist.

I got the bundles special, and only paid $39 for the router which I can use.

Funny thing is, I phoned a local computer store and they were selling the WinXP upgrade for $179 Canadian

I only paid $189 Canadian for both the router and the upgrade at STAPLES....LOL...

Sweet deal man, that's not bad at all.

Cool Chako. Let us know what you think of Windows XP. And the product activation scheme.

Well, I just did the quick upgrade over WinME. I was going to do a clean install but a few things kept me guessing. Things such as how do I transfer my HDs over to NTFS from FAT32. Was going to format the HD, but it would be in the old file system. You have to remember I have no NT/Win2000 exp. Tried to figure out if I needed to make a floppy boot disk but it did not ask me to. ROFLMAO...boy am I lost. Everything is different. So as it now stands, I am using Fat32 on the HDs, but will change them over if I can figure it out. I would like to eventually do a complete start from scratch as soon as I figure out a little more about this.

As for the product activation scheme...no problems. It was very unobtrusive and done over the Internet in a second. All I did was press a button and it spent 10 seconds looking at my hardware and then another button press to send it over the net. That was it. From all the complaints this has garnered on the net, I was a little surprised at how simple and unobtrusive it was.

The docs that came with the OS is junk. Really...I would think they could have used the pages too better use then the useless drivel they place on there. In other words...no documentation once again. I think I may have to buy a WinXP idiot book or something to figure out some of the more advanced features.

I won't touch the router for another few days. Got to get some more Cat 5 cables to hook up a third computer, and call my @home provider about my IP address and other info to configure the whole enchilada (seeing that I have almost no networking exp other then using serial back in the days and a 4 port hub later...this should prove educational and interesting).

We are getting ready to buy a new computer ... another Gateway ... Wolf insists One of our friends, computer lab specialist at the local university, said to stay away from WindowsXP and to order it with Windows2000 ????? Any input?

Use CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] to switch to NTFS. There is no going back. But, NTFS is what I always use.

Yes. I did a little more researching on the matter, and I am a little scared about the "non reversible" part of switching to NTFS. I chickened out and am sticking with Fat32 for the meantime because I am not certain if WinXP is a keeper yet. If it isn't, then I want to be able to get back to WinME or at least 98SE.

If you're buying a whole new system, you might as well get XP. It will end up being supported better in the long run. Eventually windows ME, 98, and 2000 will be weeded out. Hopefully not for a while though.

I have one very serious problem with WinXP. It has something to do with how it handles monitors. My Multigraph 447Xpro Nokia monitor does not seem to have an "optimal refresh rate setting" in the monitor properties. As a result, I keep having to up the refresh rate from the 60HZ that XP seems to think I need. Very annoying. Anybody know a fix for this. I have a Radeon 64DDR VIVO.
