Gateway Support

I was required to call Gateway support today and I was hoping that it would be better than Dell support, which involved the Better Business Bureau and several months of no computer......
I called today about a bad power supply on a machine and the guy argued that it was a virus. Here's a transcript of the part about viruses. The virus conversation went on for around 20 minutes and my co-workers were rolling on the floor laughing at this guy.... and yes I was almost screaming at this moron.
Me: Look, it was running virus protection, Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition 9.0. We've never had a problem with a virus, I doubt that it is a software problem, but a hardware problem. We do not even reach BIOS, but instead the computer and fans do not start up when we attempt to start the system.
Guy: Well, obviously, we're in 2005 mister, you're at year 9. Now how many viruses from year 9 do you think that you're going to find? You definetely have a virus on your computer
Me: No, you don't understand, 9 is the newest version that Symantec uses. Our entire Unviersity runs on it. Our definitions were updated 3 days ago and the software about a month ago. There are no viruses on the system and none were ever encountered. Our policy is to completely re-install windows when there is a virus encountered.
Guy: well you that means that you have a bad virus scanner. You have viruses, your scanner just doesn't find them. Sucks to be you.....
Me: We run this software on thousands of machines in an enterprise environment. The virus protection works on every computer with no problems. It finds the viruses when they exist. It runs automatically every night and it has found viruses on other machines before.
Guy: You only have 512 mb of ram. That's not enough to run virus protection. That's the minimum amount of ram for windows XP.
Me: The minimum amount of ram for windows is 64 megabytes. We run visual studio 2003 and other applications with very high requirements on this machine, system resources would not prevent the virus protection from running.
Guy: Virus protection is like no other application. It requires lots of system resources.... Lets try running your virus protection right now.
Me: I CAN'T! MY COMPUTER DOES NOT START UP. THE POWER SUPPLY IS PUTTING OUT NO POWER WHATSOEVER. THE POWER SUPPLY TEST IS NEGATIVE. WE HAVE TRIED ANOTHER POWER SUPPLY AND IT WORKS. WE HAVE TRIED POWER SUPPLY TESTERS!
Guy: Well I guess that serves you right for not having virus protection. You got your power supply infected with a virus. Now if you tell me that you don't have a virus, I'm going to VOID your warranty and I don't want to have to viod your warranty
Me: Can I please talk to your supervisor? This is a hardware problem that you are missing here.
Guy: Sure, but it's not a hardware problem. THat doesn't happen with Gateway hardware. You've got a virus mister.... )
Yes, this was a very disturbing call and no, NONE OF THAT IS MADE UP. That exact conversation went on for way to long before I got to a manger who is sending us another power supply. What is happening to the tech support? Dell and Gateway are supposed to be closer to the top............... AHGAGAGA! WTF?

possible if you sneeze over your PSU......

I think that both of these viruses would be equally hard to get your PSU infected with.
Posted by: uh...ok
Is that a real transcript of the conversation? I wouldn't think that they would speak like that to you (not in terms of content, but in terms of manner).

Well, "Sucks to be you....." were not his exact words and "Sure, but it's not a hardware problem. THat doesn't happen with Gateway hardware. You've got a virus mister...." was paraphrased. Other than that, it was almost word for word. Due to the experiences we've had with these companies, we keep very tight transcripts of what goes on over the phone...
