Windows XP problem

Till recently I was using windows ME, but now I have switched to XP (thank you nokia for making your software support only XP and 2000). Now I've got this really freaky problem. When I connect to the internet using my Dial-Up connection, after a variable amount of time it disconnects automatically. This time can be anything from 30 minutes to 30 seconds. But this disconnect is not normal. My modem remains active and connected and I can see the little connection icon in my system tray. However I can no longer open any site in any of my browsers (firefox, IE6) nor can I download anything, even with a download manager. And now if I click the icon in the system tray the connection window flashes on the screen for a millisecond and then vanishes. The only solution I have then is to restart both my modem and my computer. I've been using this modem and connection on WindowsME for quite some time and never faced a problem like this there. So why is this happening on XP? What do I do?

Full format and reinstall

the only thing that comes to mind first is drivers. did you install the drivers for the modem that were the ME version? you may need to download new drivers from some one elses internet conection.

I've got the latest drivers installed: WinXP compatible

If I were you I make the move to broadband if financially feasible.

Cant do that. Any other advice?

you could try a new modem. either borrow one from some one temporarily, or get a new one.

Call your ISP and see if their is any speical settings you need to input in the mode properties....

Thanks for all the help. I borrowed a new modem and it seems to be working fine (no sudden disconnects except once that too after half an hour). However I've discovered that I can use my own modem without disconnects if I end the process called svchost.exe (which is consuming 14000 KB or so). Now If I dial the connection is established but its not visible. That is the computer behaves as if I'm disconnected but in reality I'm actually connected. Since the computer does not know Im connected It cant disconnect me. Later however I must disconnect my phone line manually.

just out of curiosity, who is you ISP?
